Hello! My husband and I are US citizens, on non imm O visas for retirement/extension of stay in Nakhon Si Thammarat. May will be our 4th extension.

We are being told by a local attorney that depositing at least 65k per month income into a Thai bank from a foreign source no longer applies to Americans!? Is this true? I cannot find any documentation on this. We have been depositing more than that for the past year.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An American couple on Non-O visas for retirement is seeking clarification on whether the income requirement to deposit 65,000 Baht monthly into a Thai bank account still applies, as they have received conflicting information from a local attorney. Community members assert that while documentation and proper transfer methods are crucial, the monthly income requirement remains valid provided specific conditions are met.

Remember, being told by an agent OR even an immigration officer that you can't use monthly income (especially IF you have a full 12 months of international transfers IN to your thai bank account in your name only of the requisite amount) does NOT mean it can't be done, it means you need to stand your ground, push it up the chain of command and/or threaten to file a written appeal if you're denied.

We are done.. Thanx one and all for the conversation.

One last thing for transferwise questions (if that's how you're moving money go to

Last year the local Imm. Office told my fellow American friend his only option was 800K in the bank since the American Embassy Bkk no longer issued the Income Affidavit. Immigration was dead wrong but nothing could be done about it.

I successfully received my retirement extension in Bangkok in Dec 2019 using the 65k monthly income method. But make sure your paperwork is in order (especially that your bank statements are labeled "FTT"). In my case, they mislabeled 4 months as domestic transfers, (thanks to Transferwise, the service I used to move money into my Thai bank account) and I had to get documentation from their partner pass-through bank to confirm that all my transfers came from overseas.

@Joe **********
I am pretty sure Kbank uses TFN for their code as well.
Joe ***********
Yes - clarify with your Imm office beforehand. Also be sure each monthly transfer deposit in your account is labeled "International Transfer Deposit" and encoded as FTT in the Bankbook (Foreign Telegraphic Transfer)

Is there a fix to this. I intended to switch from banked money to proof of monthly income in a few months for my next extension of stay (retirement).
Joe ***********
One critical question: is there proof of 12 previous months of receiving 65K Baht tagged as "International Transfer" into a Thai Bank account for the primary person. Get that done then apply for the "follow on"
Dan ******
Yes indeed. There was an article about this situation on Thai Visa (not Thai Visa Advise) a day or so ago. Where one IO told an American he could not do a monthly deposit extension, only lump sum. The office boss later corrected this. I think it was Phuket.
Dan ******
Yes. Many fall through the cracks because their transfers do not meet the exact requirements. If they do, immigration is supposed to accept the monthly transfer method. They may not like it, because it is more work for them to review than the "lump sum" method.

important question😉

i am u.s. retiree in Phuket. I get direct deposit from s s. to my Thai account, more than 65,000. It works.

For VISA TYPE "O" Multiple is TBH 65.000 monthly income each person and age 50 over necessary or check Local Thai Consulate in USA
Robert *******
The local Thai Consulate in the USA do sell a visa but has no clue about requirements of the Extension of Stay which you get from an Immigration Office inside Thailand.

anyone needing the Bangkok translation service we used, let me know. It was very professional. They include in their package, not only the translation, but also attending to the DFA offfices to get it stamped.

Don, I need a professional service already for my pension coming over. They want the utility bill translated. Could you send the contact details, please?

We heard that you could go to the local Amphur? Basically get 'Thai married'. HAHA.
Don *********
My situation may be different...but when I apply for an extension, I use the 800k deposit as my qualifier and then, after I have my extension stamp, my wife applies, by piggy-backing on my visa extension.
Don *********
Deanna, as you can see from my comments, that is not suffiicient. Pleased to see you will have the time to get the translation etc done.
Don *********
an afterthought....what do the regs say?
Don *********
Then Mr. Happy has been amazingly kind to us!!!!
Don *********
Mr. Happy 555.. yes we have dealth with him for this past 15 years. I have grey hair to prove it😂 all I can say is, this route works for us. But you know, every persson who walks in to an IO is liable to get a different answer. we have to submit an up to date marriage cert, translated into Thai and certified, by our Embassy and then re-certified by the Thai DFA. NOt usre of the sequence, as its been 11 months since we went through the hoops. I will check, next week.
Tod *********
correct, BUT some offices won't let your spouse (especially if they are over 50) get the "trailing spouse" piggyback extension they make BOTH people carry their own extensions and show proof of funds.

@Don ********
.. are you doing that in Nakhon I assume? Cause 'Mr Happy' said we could not do that.
Tod *********
That is totally incorrect you CAN use the monthly income method BUT you would need to transfer IN to the country from abroad into a thai bank account in your name only a miminum of 65K baht a month each month every month for the preceding 12 months.
George ********
exactly. That was what I have been told yesterday at immigration in CM.
John **********
You'd be better talking to your local immigration office. They are normally very helpful and no the rules. One point though if you are both on non-o retirement extensions you need 65k per month each

We want to do one visa, with dependent (me).
James ********
Visit your local Thai Imm Office pick up list for extension of stay.

And get another attorney. Not needed for your extension.
James ********
Yep.....that makes a huge difference.

Still an attorney cannot do what you could do yourself. Lets see what

has to say.

We've always done it ourselves. But this year, we want to have one visa, and me riding on/dependent on my husband's. The local imm chief says we can't do that, but I know many in other districts that have.
