TLDR : Answer Summary
To enter Thailand on a US passport without a visa, you are technically required to have an exit ticket within the 60 days granted on arrival. However, in practice, immigration officers rarely check for this requirement. Airlines are more likely to request proof of onward travel, so it is wise to verify with your airline. Some travelers suggest purchasing a cheap refundable ticket to a neighboring country just in case, as experiences vary widely among individuals.

Interestingly enough, my wife and I traveled together to Thailand. We had tickets leaving Thailand to Vietnam 57 days later. I made it through Delta check in no problem. My wife on the other hand was asked to prove she had an exit ticket prior to 60 days. So, I got through without being asked, she didn't. It's a crap shoot. You should have one just in case. Get refundable tickets somewhere cheap then cancel them once you're in country.

Australia very important to have return ticket as l found out the hard way. Hit by motor bike ended up with perforated bowl had emergency op. Tried to claim travel insurance but got knocked back due to no return date very costly visit.

actually a very important point that isn't taken into consideration. There are travel insurances that only cover round trip tickets.

Legally, you must have a ticket out of Thailand within the 60 days you'll receive on entry if you don't have a visa.

Realistically immigration very rarely asks. But your airline is far more likely to ask and if they require it they will not let you travel without it. So ask your airline.
