Hey folks. I arrive in Bangkok next week. First time. Am I required to have proof of an exit flight? I’ve had mixed input and need a definitive answer. I’m entering from USA on visa exempt.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When arriving in Bangkok on a visa-exempt entry from the USA, it is advisable to have proof of an onward or return flight, as it is often required by airlines. While immigration officers have varied experiences reported by travelers, many suggest that airlines may not allow boarding without such proof. It's best to have a cheap ticket booked (potentially one that can be canceled) to avoid issues at check-in or upon arrival.

For peace of mind just buy the cheapest bus ticket out of thailand to show them (with no intention of actually taking the bus)

You should have one. As they say, immigration probably won't ask you. But IF they do ask, you had better be prepared to produce one. Saying that, I think the airlines will ask more than the Thai immigration.
I flew in a few days ago, and they asked the guy in the line next to me at immigration.

New Update. Just arrived at BKK and foreign passport holders need to show passport, eVisa and arrival ticket. It's on a sign. I would have taken a photo for proof but no photos are allowed. For visa on ARRIVAL you need a DEPARTURE ticket also on a sign. I got in with my oneway ticket. Now sitting in front of 7-11 having a beer and waiting for my flight to Ubon. Cheers!
So update. Arrived at LAX and since I am on the "other side" of security and have all my boarding passes I walked straight to my next gate waiting for boarding. Still no show eVisa, vaccine or return ticket. FYI, I am here on a TR visa and have a one way ticket 😜 I bought one and cancelled it to get my visa 😂 Now that you can get 75 days visa exempt plus extension for 1900 baht the TR visa is a waste of money. By the time I get my extension to stay 90 days I will have spent almost $60 on Visa's. 😡. I wish Thai immigration or TAT or the government would get their shit together. They are just trying to milk us for as much money as they can.
umm, I thought you were married to a Thai. Just get a type O visa based on Thai wife instead of a TR. It is no more difficult than an Evisa, and lasts 90 days if you don't extend it, and takes no money in the bank, or any return ticket. The requirement of money in the bank, and a Thai bank, changes if you decide to get the one year extension. Then I believe you can get a visiting family extension for another 60 days. Quite a few more days for just a little less cost.
then put bt400,000 in your Thai bank account, and after it being there at least two months, and it doesn't matter where the money comes from, then apply for the one year extension. The rest of the lengthy paperwork is pretty easy to get. Just remember, on a TR visa you need at least 15 days left in order to apply for type O based on Thai wife. First you get a 90 day visa, giving you time to get the money in the bank, and seasoned for two+ months. When that two month time frame has passed then you can apply for your one year extension.
got it. Money on the way. Should be here tomorrow. Rates are good! Thanks for your advice. Maybe if I can make it to BKK I'll look you up. Have to go there to register our marriage and apply for wife's green card so there should be opportunities.

Well yeah ! Just put yourself in their shoes . They want you to come , spend money but they don’t want you to shack up here and be a burden on their economy . We flew in from San Francisco on Japan Airline on a one way ticket .
depends who your flight is with. I've been asked at check in departing on EVA, ANA and United.

They didn't ask me but I bought a rented ticket at rentonwardticket just in case 9 dollars for a random flight or 12 dollars for requested airports. The tickets are valid for 72hrs. ( the airline I flew out with did not ask me to see a return ticket either )

If you look and dress better your results will be better.
YES...! Not like a businessman, per se, but like you have enough funds so you won't panhandle! Yes, broke backpackers are a thing, everywhere!

I have only ever been asked for a return flight by the airline at check in, and then only twice.

If originating in USA, the airline ‘may’ require you to have an exit flight.

I'm sitting at the American Airlines terminal in Atlanta as I write this. On my way to BKK. I was not asked for return ticket, vaccinations or eVisa. However, I still have to take Cathey when I get to Asia so they may ask there. But, I have never been asked on any of my previous visits as a tourist.

It’s best to be safe and comply with the rules. Keep in mind flying from the US is a very long and tedious trip. Who needs any hassles, when one is dead tired. Especially if the plane is full, no way to stretch out. Be sure and walk the isles frequently and wear compression knee socks. I don’t care your age, do so. You’ll be very happy in BKK. If there are any delays etc. the trip gets even longer. I go from BKK to the northeast after a night in Bangkok. Either drive6-7 hours or catch another Thai flight. Even then for me it’s another hour of travel.

"Expedia Trick"... Expedia has free cancellation within 24 hours with 100% refund. Tickets to Rangoon, Myamar are like $50 USD from BKK. Book the flight. Print the documents. Cancel the ticket. Boom done.
I just flew from the US through United Airlines/Ana a week ago. I was not asked by my airline or the officer in BKK. If they ask, buy a cheap land bus ticket.

Phil Jones Yup. The onward ticket that's good for at least a few days is an excellent option. Most options are only good for 24 hours so with a flight from N America (that can last 30-45 hours not counting pre-flight/security/check in time), that option is only good for checkin but is expired before arrival at immigration. ☹️

Buy cheap bus ticket example to Malesia or cheap flying ticket.
if just changing dates it’s 50$ American Air. Unless your a club member or flying with the best ticket. Unfortunately you don’t have time to get a airline charge account. I have American, but others are available. My son used United. Accumulate some nice air Mike credits too.
im a delta member with the american express delta card.....refunds are instant and changes are instant (no extra fees)...so i stick to them :) for small flights around asia though i use air asia etc

Refundable tickets are very expensive plus there's hassle and dealing with refund process. Also exchange rate costs.
Your airline is much more likely to give you problems than immigration. Your airline might not let you board your flight if you cannot show proof of travel out of Thailand within the number of days you will be stamped in for.
oh sorry, I read wrong, maybe I should go to sleep 😴 I stuck too much your words from airline, sorry, I go to sleep now 😴🙏

I was asked a return ticket upon arrival 2 days ago. It all depends on which officer but by law is needed. I had to buy online before they allow me in.
