I have heard a lot about needing 20,000 baht single/40,000 baht per family in cash on arrival when entering Thailand. My husband, son, and I are flying to Thailand from Vientiane today. The ATMs here in Vientiane only allow a withdrawal of 2,000,000 KIP. Thank you for any advice you can give.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Travelers to Thailand may need to show 20,000 baht per adult or 40,000 baht per family in cash upon arrival, although this is not strictly enforced for families without a history of visa issues. It's advisable to carry the required amount in a convertible currency like USD, EUR, or GBP, as KIP may not be accepted. There are no ATMs before immigration checkpoints, so it's important to be prepared before traveling.

Thank you everyone. We were able to get enough money out of the ATM. We were not asked to show the funds, but I am still glad we had the funds to give me peace of mind. Thank you!

If you don’t have a history of back to back tourist visas / visa exempt entries / extensions I.e you are trying to stay in Thailand long term without the correct visa then it is highly unlikely that you will be asked. Traveling as a family reduces that chance to pretty much zero. However it’s up to the immigration officer on the day. No one can guarantee that you won’t be asked but the chances are really slim. The amount needs to be 20k baht or equivalent in a convertible currency. KIP would probably not count as a convertible currency. You need something like usd euro gbp etc. There are no atms prior to the immigration desks at any Thai airport/border crossing.
