TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand on a 60-day visa exemption stamp, it's advisable to have proof of onward travel, although enforcement can vary. While the immigration officers may not always check for an onward ticket, airlines often require it before boarding. Some travelers have reported being asked for this documentation at check-in or boarding, while others have not been checked at all. To avoid potential issues, having a plane or bus ticket—possibly to a nearby country—can be a wise precaution.

I just arrived and wasn't asked to produce outbound flight.

Hit or miss. There's ticket services for cheap. Or just buy one to Cambodia for 40$
Last trip in March coming in from Laos Thai BKK asked to see my outbound ticket.

Technically it’s a requirement. I’ve never had it checked at immigration but I know of cases where this has happened. But airlines often check. I flew out of LAX last Tuesday and the airline asked to see my exit ticket.
since my last trip out of memphis in june no one has ever asked to see a return ticket in america when i left the usa.. thailand only has asked at don m airport. suv airport just go on by.. though after lasik surgery they said my facial scan wasnt the same :)
It’s a matter of chance. Mine has been checked twice this year, once in Christchurch, New Zealand, and again last week in LAX.

Your first point of worry is the airlines you travel on as some may require proof of exit. In the Thai immigration side, it is a coin toss. If your travel profile is good and you do not look like you are trying to live in Thailand without a proper permit, you will probably have no issues. But if you are repeatedly going in and out on visa free tourist stamps, you may meet some resistance

Airline may ask for sight of return/onward ticket or, ‘some sort of visa’. Checking in online or at airport totems doesn’t avoid this risk as your airline can request this at the departure gate or if, transiting, when boarding your next flight leg.
No. Airline staff check boarding pass to passport at the departure gate. They know if you’ve checked-in at the check-in desk or if you checked-in online or at the airport kiosks.
I checked-in at the check-in desk at Lisbon Airport for a three leg flight. The agent told me I needed either a return/onward ticket or ‘some sort of visa’. However, she said if she’d been checking me in for another airline she wouldn’t be asking for this which, in her opinion, wasn’t fair. She issued with all three boarding passes. At Madrid when attempting to board for my second leg the boarding gate supervisor stopped me telling me she had cancelled my two remaining boarding passes. I now needed to give her sight of return/onward ticket or a visa. I was told I shouldn’t have been allowed to board at Lisbon.
no.... I flown into Thailand 40 to 50 times.i recall once when they almost refused me entry, it was possibly a second incident. It just depends on the frame of mind of the immigration officer
i have done many times but that is not to say i recomend it . Easy to fix with a simple bus ticket to cambodia if questioned. I did 8 years in Thailand once without any visa . I saved a fortune just paid a small fine when i left. Times have changed since then though .
