Hello, do I need to cancel my extension of stay before leaving? My school told me to contact them before I leave Thailand but now they’re telling me it would take 2-3 weeks to process the cancellation when I only have 10 days left on my visa. I wish they’d told me this sooner or I had read up on it but they also advised that I should leave, apply for the dtv and then cancel the extension of stay once I return. Would appreciate any insight.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is seeking advice on whether they need to cancel their extension of stay before leaving Thailand. They were informed by their school that canceling might take 2-3 weeks, which raises concerns since their visa expires soon. They are also contemplating applying for a DTV while abroad and canceling their extension upon return, to avoid lengthy absence from their pets. Multiple commenters provide insights on the process, emphasizing that it's possible to cancel the extension after re-entering Thailand and share personal experiences regarding the cancellation of educational visas.
I was in your situation and didn't worry about any paperwork for stopping the educational visa. If you leave Thailand without getting the re-entry paperwork the Educational Visa is automatically void/canceled.
Flew to the Philippines, did my dtv on my cellphone, and within 8 days of submitting it I had my DTV. That included re-submitting documents they requested that I had included.
1 thing i recommend is if your using the soft power option is to pay for the course with your bank card. I paid cash and they wanted a bank transfer slip. I uploaded screenshots of 🏧 withdrawals, bolt transfer to the muay thai gym, and nice letter explaining everything with a copy of the receipt stating paid cash again.
You CANNOT have two Thai Visas at the same time. What are you now on ..an extension of stay for 90 days? Ed Visa for.. Thai language study? University study?
Thai language study. In my passport it shows that the visa will expire at the end of this month. When I spoke to my school they said it will take 2-3 weeks (business days only) to process the cancellation by which time I would already have had to leave so they told me the best solution is to apply for the dtv and re-enter Thailand with it after which I can get the letter from them and cancel the ed visa. Obviously I’m nervous about that but according to them it’s normal. I wouldn’t mind but I have cats here and I don’t want to be away from them for longer than necessary so now I’m not sure what on earth to do.
Anonymous participant you should be able to get a letter from your school which states your last day of study and take it to immigration yourself to cancel your extension (your passport, your extension). But you can also do it after your return to Thailand
oh great, thank you. My school says it’s better to wait to cancel it until I return because cancelling it would mean I need to stay out of Thailand even longer and I don’t want to leave my cats for that long. Everybody gives different advice though and I would apparently need to go to a different city to cancel it myself which I’m not sure I have time for since I have so much to do before I leave. Appreciate the advice :)
Anonymous participant you need to cancel the extension at the office that you got it at. But you won't need to stay out of Thailand for any longer than it takes you to apply for the DTV AND receive the result of your application. You need to remain in the location served by the consulate you applied at until the process is complete so it could be a week or two, perhaps longer
