Question about the DTV application process. I already live in Thailand for a few years on another visa. We plan to move to the DTV because it's the better option today.

I want to clarify: do I need to be physically in the UK to apply for the DTV even through the application is online?

(asking because with young kids, that is a pain!)
Answer summary
The application for the Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) requires that you be physically present in the UK, despite it being an online process. Several comments confirm that applicants need to be in their passport country during application, and it may be more practical for those living in Thailand to consider other visa options.

Hi! Yes, even though the DTV application is done online, you are still required to be physically present in the country where you are applying.

If you're a UK citizen planning to apply through the Thai Embassy in London, you would need to return to the UK and remain there during the application process, from submission until you receive the result.

I understand that travelling with young kids can be challenging, so it's better to plan ahead and allow extra time in case the embassy requests additional documents.

Just to add, please note that if you still have an active Thai visa, you may need to wait until it expires or arrange for its cancellation before applying for the DTV.

Also, a police clearance certificate is now part of the DTV requirements. For UK applicants, this is called an ACRO Police Certificate, which can take around 30 days to obtain. So, we recommend applying for it well before your planned DTV application date to avoid delays.

Happy to share that we've successfully assisted over 500 students with their DTV applications through our cooking programs. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions or would like a free consultation, as we're quite familiar with the process. 😊

If you have young kids in school just get a guardianship visa extension, then you don't have to leave Thailand. With the dtv you leave and return every six months. You physically have to be in your passport country to apply. Even though it is an online application, it is tracked as to where you are by the IP address. For the cost of returning, and the length of time it will take to get the required police report, and then the actual application wait, it might just be cheaper to buy another privilege 5 year visa.

This would have been true last year, but the new Elite visa is 4x the price we paid. It's an insane price increase. Ill look at the guardianship visa though, thanks

Anonymous participant Thai bank account with bt500,000 in it is the financial requirement, then the rest is just documentation verifying the child, and school.

Anonymous participant not sure about that. Most just don't say if they do, or not, so not sure.

Regardless, you'll apply no matter what anyone says so just do it.

If you live in Thailand already you should apply for the correct visa. A DVT should not be used as your loop hole

I don't understand this point? I am in thailand on the Elite privilege visa, it's running out. We are freelancers, we want to stay. How is the DTV a loophole?

Would appear some people don't like others getting a better deal. If it's possible to reduce your costs then go for it.

Jeffrey A Hynds He is a freelancer, the DTV Workcation is an appropriate visa also. Why is a new Elite visa more appropriate?

Yes, the application needs to be done in a country where you're a permanent resident, other than Thailand.

And you have to stay there during the whole process.

i'd of expected them to have a rule for people who already have made a home here. Anyway, thanks.

Anonymous participant : The thing is, the DTV is not intended to allow people to make a home in Thailand. It’s intended to let people stay for a limited period of time and then they must leave, but they can repeat during the 5 year life of the visa.
Barnabas *********

Jeffrey A Hynds You can stay up to 5 years continuously on a DTV. No requirement to spend a single night outside Thailand during those 5 years.

Anonymous participant if you've been here long enough, you should know that Thailand will never make things easy for foreigners. You will always be a visitor here. Or at least until the old guard gets replaced. But you and I won't be here long enough to see that happen.

Yes, they changed the policy at the end of August

DTV_BegPecker that wasn't changed. You always had to be at the place you were applying from.

well he asked if he needed to physically be in the UK. In August, he could have physically been in Laos or Vietnam, so, yes, the fact that he specifically needs to be in the UK is part of the policy change. He did not need to be physically in Uk in August

I'm not convinced the OPs post is genuine. 'I am in thailand on the Elite privilege visa'. Prices of which range from; 650,000 to 5,000,000 THB. He's now intending to apply for a DTV at 10,000 THB. Then complaining that travelling is a pain. Good way to trigger the DTV haters in this group.

Barnabas Collins and I very much doubt the OP is either a citizen of or a permanent resident of Thailand...so he's off back to the UK to apply per the new rules in place.

DTV_BegPecker OP said he's already in Thailand. His question was as you apply online does it matter where you physically are? Reasonable question in a digital age. 31st August 2026 changes limited applications to countries of which you are either a citizen or permanent resident and also require a criminal record check.
