Do I need Thai health insurance for the Non O-A Visa application?

Apr 30, 2026
I plan to move to Thailand in February 2027 and apply for Non O-A Visa 90 days prior to my arrival. I was hoping that someone could clarify this for me. When they ask for proof of insurance when I apply for my visa, do I have to provide my current US health insurance provider? Or, do I have to acquire approved Thai health care insurance? I really don't want to have to pay my premiums in the US and have insurance premiums in Thailand and I've not arrived yet. Maybe I'm overthinking this too much. Kind replies are appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Non O-A Visa requires health insurance as part of its application process, which typically necessitates obtaining approved Thai health insurance. While some commenters suggest that the Non O Visa has fewer requirements, it's crucial to acquire the correct visa based on your plans. Check the Thai consulate's website for a list of accepted insurance providers.

The non-O is a 90-day visa that doesn't require insurance, or anything really, besides proof of finances. This is the visa that most people want.

The non-OA is a 1-year visa that requires insurance, medical certificate, criminal background check, and is not what most people want because you will be required to purchase Thai insurance for every year as part of your extension in Thailand.

Make sure you are applying for the correct visa through the e-visa system.
