TLDR : Answer Summary
The general consensus is that having a proof of onward travel is not strictly required when entering Thailand with a DTV (Destination Thailand Visa). However, to avoid potential hassles at customs, many travelers recommend purchasing a low-cost onward ticket as a precaution.
What is a Destination Thailand Visa visa? Why do you need a visa to get a visa?

No… never been asked for it coming back into Thailand. They’ve asked how long I’m staying I always say “180 days”.

For less than 20 bucks you can by an onward ticket and clear up all your worry. Maybe you don't need it, maybe the customs guy is having a bad day and they ask. Just because it isn't a requirement doesn't mean you might not get hassled for it. Things are changing with Thailand Customs quickly these days.

Supposed to . Best to buy a train or bus ticket to play safe I’ve been told by veterans who been doing this before us . Great tip

No. And it's called the DTV, not the DTV visa. You don't need to use the word visa twice
