I went to SR twice by airline. But this has been interesting reading. 555

I had a rental car. Left it at secure parking lot on Thai side of border. Walked across border. Ignore guys saying they will get you a Cambodia visa. Just walk to the Cambodia visa office and get it yourself. On the Cambodia side, there are many private taxis who can take you to Siem Reap. Last note, there is an area with Casinos between Thailand and Cambodia, which is like a visa free zone. You have to walk past this area to get to the Cambodia visa offices.

Alright so update, I decided to go ahead and try for the e-visa but I’ve reached an impasse, need to know port of entry into Cambodia and it doesn’t say that anywhere in the ticket, just says straight from Bangkok to virak buntam bus branch in siem reap…someone said likely going through poi pet, should I just put that? What are the consequences if I guess wrong? I can try asking the company but they’re slow to respond, might not get the visa in time if I wait out their answer…what happens if I just have to get the visa at the border? I just pay more or will they turn me away?

The Van registration book (blue book) needs to be in your name. If it is not in your name you cannot take it over the border.
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Declan Connolly well how does that work if you bought tickets in a passenger van from a transport company? Surely they don’t expect the van to be registered in the names of all 6-8 people who are paying for the ride?
Ian **********
@Rob *********
you need to put that in your post as everyone thinks your driving your own van as did I think that too
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Ian Reynolds huh, ok, I thought it somewhat implied since I said I was taking a van rather than driving one, but I went ahead clarified that it’s a ticket in a pass van, hopefully that ilicits more clear responses
Declan **********
@Rob *********
I assume you are doing a border bounce to get a new visa exemption stamp?
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Declan Connollyno I’m planning to leave Thailand and spend maybe a week or so in Cambodia, then move on to Vietnam for a few weeks after that…may come back to Thailand after but undecided at this point so no not a visa run

It is unclear if you are taking your own vehicle or rental across the border which is why you are getting these type of responses. I don't know if there are vans from Bangkok to Siem Reap but there are big buses. However, a flight is only 2000-2500 baht which is not that much more. 100% get an e-visa in advance. The Cambodia border officers will try to overcharge. If you do decide to take one of the International buses, verify if they will accept an e-visa. Some international buses insist on having a physical Visa in your passport. Finally, a nice way to get from Cambodia to Vietnam is to travel to Phnom Penh and take the boat to Chau Doc. Visit some in the Mekong and continue to HCMC.

hey so I wanted to follow up on this, I’m tryin to apply for my Vietnam visa and it’s been a huge pain…if I take the boat to chau doc what’s my port of entry? They need to know it and chau doc is not an option I can select
Fred ******
@Rob *********
Song Tien landport. The boat will make a stop for immigration and continue on to Chau Doc.

@Fred *****
got it, thanks…as long as we’re on the subject, any idea what a typical short term single entry Vietnam tourist visa should cost me? I found a website that looked legit but is charging $99 for one and that seems a bit rip-offy to me

ok cool, I found that one as well…will they make show a ticket out of the country as well? Should I just buy the cheapest bus ticket out of town?

Also wondering what to do once the boat lands in chau doc…is it a cool town, worth spending the night? Or should I just hop right on the bus to Ho Chi Minh?
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Fred *****
well the boat sounds lovely and I’ll try to follow up on that…as for the van ride, tickets already paid for, I’m down to my last bit of budget here so it was truly necessary, but I’ll get the e-visa if it helps…I thought I was being clear but I changed the post to clarify that it’s not my van, it’s a passenger service, I bought a ticket, gave them passport info, all that…reputable company, I’ve been using them to get around Thailand with no issue, just need to check on what the extra stuff is involved to get to Cambodia
Fred ******
@Rob *********
Veryify the Van is going to Siem Reap and not just the border. It also may be the case there will be one van to the border and then change to another one on the Cambodia side. Maybe post again after you take your trip with an update.

@Fred *****
ticket says khao San travel mart office to virak buntam siem reap bus branch…doesn’t say what port of entry is, but def says it goes all the way to siem reap. Also says e-visa is accepted, so I guess I’ll just go ahead and apply and get it done
Aaron *******
@Rob *********
They probably have arrangements for you to take a different van or bus on the Cambodian side of the border. You should call to get clarification from them
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Aaron ******
I can’t call them, I don’t know why, I have Thai SIM card but the call doesn’t go through
Nup ******
Also, I applied evisa with American passport, took about 2 days to approve. But website did say 3-5 days.
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Nup *****
Ok, so do you reckon I’ll be better off if I just do the e-visa ahead of time? Will that make the process smoother? I leave Monday, I can probably get it in time if it only takes a few days
Nup ******
Its my first time so i don't have any past experience to compare to. However, I thought if there is a way to get it done now, why wait till later? This way at least I know I am able to enter Cambodia. Considering the low cost, and easy application process, I just decided to go ahead and get an evisa. I have read in other threads that sometimes, the border guard may make process painful.
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Nup *****
ok well that’s good to know, since it’s already Wednesday and my trip is Monday I wasn’t sure if the turnaround would be fast enough but if it comes in two days I’ll apply tonight…I talked to some other travelers who were planning to do the same thing and seemed pretty confident it would be fine, glad I double checked before I left
Nup ******
Wow… anyway i am taking a bus this Saturday. The bus company said they will stop at border but I need to double check. According to a thai friend who frequently visits Cambodia, if vehicle registration does not match with driver, its a big trouble ( someone pissed the border guard and apparently got locked up for weekend)
Carsten ************
Book a flight if you like to live. Going by van is suicide
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Carsten ***********
why so? Rough roads, or actual murderers?
Carsten ************
Many of them are driving like the Hell-Drivers. Every week accidents with lots of fatalities.

There are big busses going to PP and most probably to Siem Reap too. That's a more safe option, if you are on a budget.
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Carsten ***********
the cost for the van was actually slightly more, not by much but I picked it because it was 2 hours faster and I didn’t have to wake up at 6am to catch it…the company had good reviews and seemed reputable, is not a good option?
Carsten ************
@Rob *********
I know mini van rides only from visa runs, a couple of years ago. I never felt well. Today I avoid them whenever possible. Every week you see news reporting about horrific accidents, mostly caused by speeding or sleeping drivers.
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
…also if they fall asleep at the wheel why is a bus careening off a cliff any better?
Rob **********

@Carsten ***********
damn it’s only a 6 or so hour drive in the middle of the afternoon, they fucking fall asleep at the wheel? Really? I’m an american, I can drive 6 hours standing on my head, I’ll drive the damn thing if it’s such a problem

is it worse than getting across Mexico? Cuz I used to road trip/bus trip across Mexico all the time, and the roads there…yikes
Richard *********
Ur van? Must be in the drivers name to exit thailand>

DO NOT go via Poi Pet!!!!!.

Get a voa for $30 vs $36 for Evisa
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Richard ********
so you can go by van or no? If not why do they even offer the tickets? The ticket is through 12go Asia, I couldn’t find anywhere in the ticket if they mentioned the port of entry into Cambodia, but it’s to siem reap if that helps
Richard *********
@Rob *********
So its NOT ur van??

NO problem< VOA

99% chance it will be poi pet if ur headed to sr from Pattaya or bangkok
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Richard ********
no it’s not my van, it’s a passenger service from Bangkok, and it was 2 hours fewer than the bus trip so I booked it…so is that good? I can get in that way?
Graham ******
@Rob *********
Yes, but you walk in and walk back to the van, the van stays in Thailand
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Graham *****
ok and then what? I walk back to the van in Thailand and then the van keeps going to siem reap? Or I get into a different van in cambodia? I’m very confused by this process now
Graham ******
@Rob *********
I thought you were doing a border bounce, missed the to Siem Reap bit
Bob ********
Regardless of whether you get an evisa or buy it at the border, make sure they stamp you in. Usually the next window to where you get the visa. I got one last year, and when I tried to leave a couple of days later, they said I was illegal as I didn't get the visa stamped, they wanted $400us to fix, negotiated down to $200 as I said the ATM limit was 200 per day, a total con but no options
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Bob *******
ok well that’s good to know…but so I can for sure get one at the border, yes? And I have passport, and I have my stupid flimsy CDC vax card if they ask for it…are there fees? How much cash to bring? Is that everything?
Michael ********
You can get on border but havent done since before covid. Enjoy yourself great mexican in siem riep for sindowners
Peter *********
A lot of paperwork for van needed if entering Cambodia 🇰🇭

Ok well the suspense here is killing me, what’s the extra bit of stuff I have to do to get over the border by van? Dance off? Cage fight? Butt stuff? Why such mystery?
John **********
@Rob *********
my Thai friends had to get out of the Thai van at the border, cross over, then get into a Cambodian van on the other side.
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@John *********
yeah i asked some Thai people as well but I think it’s different for them because they’re neighbors, no? I think as an American I may have have to do more stuff to get in the country
John **********
@Rob *********
yea they can cross without a password but the van issue is the same
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@John *********
so what’s the exact issue with the vans? They make it hard for everyone no matter where they’re from? Any way to make the prepare and make the process go smoother?
John **********
@Rob *********
if you're going on an organised trip I'm sure they'll have it all worked out for you
Rob **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@John *********
ok well that’s good to know, yeah I bought the ticket through 12go Asia, provided passport info, all that…I’ve been using them to get all around Thailand and haven’t had an issue yet, but since now there’s a border crossing involved I thought I’d check and see what the extra requirements might be

see I did that and read the same thing and I also read a few other things on the internet that are steeped in vagueness, not really a clear answer is it? But see since humans are social animals and have constructed vast global social networks, and it’s a well established scientific fact that we trust and rely on the second hand experience of others who have had first hand experience first and foremost and have been programmed by evolution to acquire information this way for as long as there have been Homo sapiens traipsing about the globe, and also there is this whole 42k strong social media page fully dedicated to helping people who are in thailand and have visa questions, I thought I might try my luck here to get an accurate answer from someone who’s actually traveled that road but I’m starting to slightly regret that choice…do you know the answer and won’t tell me, or do you not know and are just trolling me? Either way, what was the point of even responding to my post in the first place if you can’t or won’t provide an actual answer to the question? We just like, hazing the new guy here?

OK…so is there less paperwork involved if I get the e-visa ahead of time? Or does that not make a difference? And if so how long does the e-visa take to process?

nothing to do with evisa its just a lot of hassle taking a vehicle from Thailand 🇹🇭 into Cambodia 🇰🇭

he’s not driving. Presumably, the company driving the van knows what THEY need.
