Hi all. "Everything else" question: on obtaining tourist visa to Vietnam. I’m American, traveling from BKK to Vietnam as a tourist in a couple of weeks. Has anyone used one of those agents you find online offering a “letter” to be presented at the airport in Vietnam? If so, can you recommend one? They look like scams.
I went to the Vietnam embassy in BKK to apply for the tourist visa & they said you need an “approval letter” issued by the immigration dept. of Vietnam. This requirement does NOT appear on the Vietnam embassy Thailand’s website. In fact, their site warns to be wary of “fake websites.” Thanks for any advice!

TLDR : Answer Summary
An American traveler is seeking advice on obtaining a tourist visa to Vietnam while departing from Bangkok, Thailand. The traveler expresses concerns about online agents offering 'approval letters' for visas, suspecting they may be scams. After a visit to the Vietnam embassy in Bangkok, they learned about the requirement for an official 'approval letter' which is not mentioned on the embassy's website. Several comments highlight that an official e-visa can be obtained through the legitimate government website and caution against using unofficial sites. Additional advice includes preparing cash for the visa fee upon arrival.
Take with you crisp $20 US bill. No joke, you'll need it to get stamped in. Its been about 5 years since I was there last, and it was $20, and it had to be brand new bills. Really quite funny.
