I am looking for a bit of advice. My wife and I would like to spend regular periods of up to 5 months in Thailand (probably once a year). I understand that there is a 6 month visa, which one can apply for in advace of a visit, but it is only possible to stay for up to 60 days at a time on this visa, i.e. it is necessary to leave Thailand twice during a 5/6 month stay. I also understand that the on arrival tourist visa of 60 days can be extended once by a further 30 days at the immigration office. My question is if we take the on arrival trourist visa, extend it by 30 days and leave the country for a few days just before the 90 days expire, can we come back into the country and obtain another on arrival tourist visa of 60 days? If so, are there limitations on this?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on spending up to 5 months a year in Thailand using a tourist visa. They inquire whether they can obtain a new 60-day entry after extending their initial visa-exempt entry. The community discusses the nuances between the tourist visas available, including multi-entry options and the risks associated with re-entering Thailand on visa-exempt status. While a method to maximize their stay without the METV is outlined, caution is advised as immigration officers may impose additional scrutiny during re-entry.

If you all are 50 years old or above you can apply for retirement visa.

I'm planning to do this too. Just 4-6 months then go home. I have to leave in a couple weeks. I was planning on doing 5 days somewhere else then coming back in for a few more months then going home.

Last time I did this, the officer wanted to see that I had a ticket home (which I did).

Has anyone had any issues with this?

Don't be certain of getting in on the free entry. I got my 60 days, left for a two week trip outside Thailand and on exiting was told by the IO that I would need a visa if I intended to return.

He said he would put a note on the system, so I did indeed re enter with a visa.

Think you talk about 60 day visa exempt. This is no (tourist) visa where OP is talking about.

... I would guess you have a history of visa exempt entries which always raises a red flag with immigration.

no, first time I've ever used the visa exemption was in November 24, left for two weeks in January.

The last time I was in Thailand was 2019, with a visa, so I don't know what the IO was concerned about

You're talking about the 6 month METV <- multi-entry tourist visa that you get from a thai consulate in your country before you come here. That visa (if used correctly) can give you almost 9 months of stay in thailand (by taking 60 days, then the 30 day extension, then bouncing out and back, getting another 60 days, taking another 30 day extension, then bouncing just before the visa expires to get a final 60 days and extending that by 30 too)

Just so you're clear about what you're referring to; there is no "tourist visa on arrival" and

You're talking about is just showing up here and getting stamped in FREE entry for 60 days on what's called a visa exempt entry. You can extend that 60 day stamp once for 30 days for 1900baht at the immigration office. Then as you mentioned you'd exit/re-enter thailand to get a new 60 day free entry stamp (which you could extend for 30 days as well)

Entering visa exempt on the free 60 day entry taking the 30 day extension then exiting/re-entering to get a new 60 day entry w/extension would certainly give you the time you want without buying that METV before you come here.

You aren't gonna LIVE here on free entry stamps, but you should get 6 months out of it relatively trouble free per year like you mentioned

Thanks for your reply. That is exactly what will would like, 5-6 months per year in a single period.

it's not a single period. You get 60 days which you can extend by 30 at an immigration office then you have to leave Thailand and return to get another 60 plus 30. If you don't want to leave at all and are 50 or over it might be worth looking at the Non-OA visa

you should be able to do that on 60 day free entry stamps w/30 day extensions then . .. ..
