Can my Thai fiancé use her ID card instead of a passport to enter Cambodia?

Hello

Sorry I know it's not for Thailand but if anyone know.

Me and my fiancé (thai citizen) have booked trip to Cambodia end of November but today we delivered her passport for visa application to Norway. But my question is does she need her passport for enter Cambodia or can she use her ID card? We plan to stay few days there before coming back. Since we are unsure how long it will take for her to get her passport back.

TIA 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The questioner is asking if their Thai fiancé, whose passport is currently submitted for a visa application to Norway, can enter Cambodia using only her Thai ID card. The responses suggest varying information: while some confirm that for land border crossings, a Thai ID card may suffice if residing near the Cambodian border, others clarify that a passport is mandatory for flying into Cambodia. To enter Cambodia easily, especially for a short trip, it is recommended to use her passport since it guarantees entry without complications.

with her Thai ID card, she cannot spend more than 3 days in Cambodia. She needs her passport for an extended holiday. I am amazed and shocked at the many BS answers you received here

at Land borders, a Thai ID card is okay. However at airports she will be asked to show a passport. Same as when checking in to the flight - the airline wants to see a passport since from Thailand to Cambodia it is an international flight. With a Thai ID card a Thai person can only fly inside Thailand

If her Thai ID it’s show her live in Sa keaw province, she can use ID for cross border (ask for certificate at government officials hub in Sa keaw) but if she not live in another province that she must need passport.

Talk to the staff at the Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok. I got a (Norwegian) passport in May and it took less than four weeks to process and return.

I have rarely found a more helpful government post than the Norwegian Embassy.

If flying in, you'll definetly need a passport. Land borders are hit and miss with border pass. For Cambodia I think you need to be resident in the border province to be eligible. Just use the passport, much easier and Thai passport holders don't need visas for Cambodia.

yes we flying in, well she is far from the Cambodian border, and of course would be easier with her passport but as said we applied norwegian visa for her and reading horror stories at norwegian government is slow. So now wanted to if she could actually travled there with only ID card. I know already they don't need visa but I need. 😅

For Cambodia she will need a valid passport, Laos she can get a 5 day border pass by using her ID card.

You should be able to get her passport back before then.

If you plan to cross a land border crossing to enter Cambodia she could telephone the border immigration at that crossing to check if it's possible to cross with a border pass instead of a passport. You can usually find the border checkpoint phone numbers from Google maps.

Good luck...
