TLDR : Answer Summary
To take your Thai family from Buriram to Angkor Wat at Chong Chom, they will need valid passports to enter Cambodia as tourists, as ID cards are not sufficient. While some have mentioned the possibility of obtaining a border pass, it is not widely accepted and is generally recommended to obtain a passport for ease and better acceptance for travel, particularly since visits to Siem Reap require a passport.

Used to be able to just show ID.. Most were just going to the casino.. Don't know jow though.. That was 10 yrs ago.
No, it has to be a passport now. Besides, the OP wants to take the family to Siem Reap, which is 160km from the border there. So even if a border pass sufficed for the casinos (it doesn't anymore except for residents of the border district) it won't work for Siem Reap.

Thais can get a border pass within a day or two, it's not a full passport but is accepted at land borders
I see. Then their border passes could probably be used but to be honest a passport is just so much easier and better. Pay once and get 10 years usage out of it.
It's not. Cambodia stopped accepting them except for residents of border districts and then they have significant limitations on travel. Passports are mandatory for travel to Siem Reap.
Given how easy it is to apply for one, it's ludicrous why anyone would use a border pass, which, in the places they're accepted take time to issue and cost money. With a passport you can just travel directly to the border crossing and travel around the neighboring country.
It's been this fast for some years now. You can even get a passport the same day by applying at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and showing a plane ticket or other evidence of urgency and paying 3500 Baht. The passport is issued within 4 hours. Urgent service (1 day) is also offered at other Bangkok service points and possibly elsewhere too.
It's possible some upcountry offices take a couple of days longer but it shouldn't take more than a few days.
No, Thai passports take only 2 days to arrive. Apply today, passport is sent out tomorrow and you get it the next day (+1 extra day if living far upcountry).
Exactly right, my wife recently applied for a renewal Thai passport & our daughter applied for her first Thai passport at the same time and both were collected the next day.

Go to the local passport office and they can collect the new passport the next day or they will post it to them.
