my son has a family dependent visa which i thought was non O . he does 90 day checks and it is renewable yearly. non O states you can open a thai bank account but it doesn’t state non O on the visa stamps so bank are saying its not Non O . can anybody clarify is it just badly processed and should he go back to immigration?

If he is on an extension of stay, he needs to show the original Non O visa that he used to enter Thailand backed up by the extension stamps in his passport.

As others mentioned, needs a certificate of residence from local immigration.

If his mother is Thai that should mean he is Thai. Why not go through the process of getting that recognised?

Andy Oswald he has no problem with that he would do it as for the citizenship wife and i are in a minefield of notaries and apostle checks and couldn’t live any further from thai embassy and all the fees that go with it . i did it once to get my wife uk citizenship done at great expense and hassle

A non-O is only one thing, it's a 90-day VISA. Your son has not been on a visa for a long time I would wager, instead he's been on an extension. And extension is not a visa, it's an extension. Your son is not on ANY visa, including a non-O, as he's on an extension. He's on an extension based on something. Sounds like he's on a non-O based based on being a dependent of someone else who is also on an extension based on something. Those extensions are non-immigrant, but they are not visas.

he’s half thai dependent on his mother and mothers thai family if that makes anymore sense. it’s not an extension from what i can see it’s a mother dependent visa

you said he does 90 day check-ins. That means he's on a 1-year extension. A 90 day visa doesn't have any check-ins, as you leave after 90 days. The stamp in the passport should say "extension of stay". If it was a visa it would say visa.

it's a non-immigrant extension. It's not a non-O because that's a visa. He should be able to open a bank account but that doesn't mean it will be easy. He'll need a residence certificate from immigration and may need to try multiple branches before finding one willing to do it
