TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around whether a friend can obtain a Work Permit upon entering Thailand with a specific visa that has "Non-Employment" marked on it. Commenters clarify that due to this designation, he cannot obtain the Work Permit with the current visa. Instead, they suggest options like applying for a 60-day extension based on visiting family, or later obtaining a year-long Non-O visa, which may be available without proof of funds.

, he's got the 90 days he's stamped in for and he could get a 60 day extension based on visiting thai family without proof of funds at the immigration office for 1900baht.

Then he either gets the yearly extension based on marriage OR he goes and gets a year-long, multi-entry Non-O visa from a thai consulate that will issue one without proof of funds

I did the 60 days Extension of Stay last November, needed a new letter of my Embassy. Did not leave the country, just applied 30 days later for the 1 year Extension of Stay based on marriage.

it shouldn't be like that at all :/

I know people who couldn't meet the seasoning requirements on their marriage extensions and they were told by the immigration office to get the 60 day extension so their money could season the requisite time period and after that applied for their yearly extension without a problem.

Oh I forgot to mention he already has an employment letter since March before he left to get a new visa, he only got the NON-O cos he couldn't wait for the TT3. One more thing, I heard the 60 days extension means you must leave on expiration, happened to me in Pattaya Immigration office before in 2013.

If you use the monthly income as proof of financials and the money is from salary from job inside Thailand, Immigration does want copies of the Work Permit.

yep, most immigration offices let you apply for a yearly extension when you have 30 days or less left on your current stamp.

I believe he will need 90 days of proof of employment though to get an extension using income inside thailand. So what I'd do is have him start the job, (he can get a work permit on the visa he has because it's based on marriage). Then maybe get the 60 day visit family extension for 60 more days to let him build up a good record of employment history too. After that he can go to get the yearly extension based on marriage using income inside thailand.

Yes I read that.Thanks. This extension must be done like a month before the visa expires right?
Tod *********
As I posted he could use the money from his new job to meet the financial requirements of 40K baht a month in income to get the year extension based on marriage.

@Joseph **********
nope, you can't switch the type of Non-Immigrant visas inside the country.

You can switch reasons for an extension BUT he's NOT on an extension he's on the original 90 day entry of the visa itself.

He can't use this visa to get an extension based on employment.

he's gonna hafta take documentation from the company he's gonna work for and go get a 90 day single entry Non-B visa to start the process of getting an extension based on employment

Thanks Tod, just want to know one thing, he's got an employment and company ready to issue him WP for a year upon arrival. Can he get an extension based on the WP instead of Thai family as you already know that there is a required amount to be deposited in the bank for 2 months but he doesn't have that. Basically, can the visa be converted to NON-B?
Tod *********
I would say NO, seeing as it has "business purposes" crossed out and Non-Employment left on it.

What was the reason he was issued this visa?
Tod *********
@An***
that actually makes sense, :)

BUT

he's still not going to be able to get a yearly extension from it based on employment. :(

He can legally work on a Non-O based on marriage but the extension has to be based on marriage.

He could use the money from his job to meet the financial requirements though (40K baht a month in income)

Actually the “non-employment” stamped meant he got the non Imm o based on Thai wife. It’s not “No Employment”.

Married to Thai wife

As it is stamped just under the bar code on the visa: Non-Employment, so he can not get the Work Permit on this visa.
