Hi there, I'm coming to the end of my 1 year non b visa and was wondering if I'll be able to get an extension of stay based on employment as I'm working with the same company (wp expires Dec 31)?

Also the person supplying paperwork seems to think I need another medical but I thought that was for wp? Thanks in advance for assistance guys

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster (O/P) is inquiring about extending their one-year Non-B visa based on employment, noting that their work permit (WP) expires on December 31. A commenter clarifies that it is possible to apply for a yearly extension for 1,900 baht if the employer can provide the required documentation. They emphasize that this process is distinct from obtaining a new Non-B visa from a consulate and that extensions might be limited to 90 days for volunteer positions. The discussion also touches upon the confusion surrounding medical requirements, suggesting that these are typically related to the work permit rather than the visa itself.

The island life make things complicated, the Thais would say: Same Same but different. Thanks Tod to clear it up again.

Okay, lets get a few things clear about the terminology.

Once you have a Non-B visa (gotten either inside or outside the country) you can take documentation from your employer to the immigration office and apply for a yearly extension for 1900baht. Sometimes if it's a volunteer position they will only extend for 90 days at a time though.

That has nothing to do with going outta the country to a thai consulate and BUYING another Non-B visa (which is NOT extending a visa but buying a brand new one).

They are completely different things entirely.

Many people who hold Non-B's (especially in southern thailand and on the islands) don't get yearly extensions because they cannot supply the documentation requested from the immigration office to get an extension of stay granted. Instead they go to thai consulates and get a year-long, multi-entry Non-B visa (the kind you border-bounce every 90 days to get another 90 day stamp).

So the answer to the O/P is; yes if your company can meet the documentation required by the immigration office you can indeed apply for a yearly extension of stay based on employment for 1900baht (and then after that if you need to buy a re-entry permit for either 1000baht for a single or 3800baht for a multiple). You shouldn't have to leave the country and buy another Non-B from a consulate.

When i did my yearly extension..they requested to renew the work permit 1st and then get the non b extended. That was at Samputprakarn immigration.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the process is, you go get a new year extension of stay from the immigration office then you go get your new work permit.

FWIW: you can now apply for a 2 year work permit (so have the person pushing paper for you do that for you)

yes mate understood thanks for all your help

You won't need a medical certificate to apply for an extension on your current visa at the immigration office, BUT you will need it to extend your work permit another year..

@Tod ********
ok thanks but the person doing the paperwork for renewal of visa/extension seems to think I need medical for this, my wp is valid until end December

@Justin ******
, I believe you're gonna need more than just a medical certificate to get your work permit extended. they'll probably want your next years contract as well. Get ahold of the Ministry of Labor where you got your original work permit. They usually have a hand out of what's required to extend a work permit another year.

Thanks for clearing that bit up and am I right in thinking you only need a medical for the renewing of wp? Cheers Tod Daniels

@Ju***
, it's possible to get a year extension of stay off a Non-B visa period, that the original one was a single or multiple entry makes no difference at all.
Julia ************
So it's possible to get a yearly extension for a non-B multiple?
Julia ************
Is that a non-B multiple? If so, you have to apply for a new one but since your wp expires in December you can only get a single entry for 3 months I believe.

firstly I had the 3 month single then 1 year multiple complete with border runs, now this is coming to an end I've been told at local immigration by the volunteers there that I can get extension of stays based on employment valid for 3 months and all I need to do is keep going back to immigration for further extensions etc... that's what I was asking plus the medical thing
Julia ************
@Justin ******
I thought it was a year. I only get the non-b multiple so I border bounce every 90days. Therefore not 100% sure about the extension process of the single entry.
Julia ************
no, the non B single can either be extended for a total time of 1 year or you have to leave the country and get a 1 year non-B multiple after the initial 3 month visa. The non-B multiple is very common on the islands in the south while in other parts of Thailand people seem to be on a 1-year extension. Almost every business owner in Koh Phangan does border runs every 90 days. It's simply the maximum amount of time you are allowed to stay.

the extension of stay only gives 3 months, you have to go to local immigration then and report to get another 3 months etc
Julia ************
Darren Low The extension of stay that gives you a year is only possible with non-B single entry.

I was told at Phuket immigration that I would be able to get an extension of stay as I already had a non b and in the system ( with the right paperwork) that's what I was asking plus the medical thing, thank you
Julia ************
Darren Low You get stamped 90 days each time you enter and if you don't leave before the admitted until date you are on overstay.
Julia ************
Darren Low it does. You have to do a border bounce every 90 days.

Darren Low it doesn't matter now, this is divulging from what I originally asked
Julia ************
@Justin ******
Ah, I see. It's not possible to get an extension of stay for the 1 year multiple entry non-B. You will have to get a brand new one but I had the same problem earlier this year as the work permit has to be valid for at least 8 months to be issued a new one. You can extend the wp earliest a month before expiry. No, I'm not a teacher, I run a hostel.

no I'm not on an extension of stay, i am at the end of a year non b, thought it'd be easier to get extension of stay so I don't have to leave country every 3 months like I did with the non b
Julia ************
Ok, so he's on an extension of stay. Thought he meant the ME visa. Yeah, then off to immigration.
