Is there a way to use the QR code payment methods WITHOUT having a Thai bank or Thai phone # ? TIA🙏🏻
Answer summary
The conversation explores the possibility of using QR code payment methods in Thailand without holding a Thai bank account or mobile number. Several users suggest alternatives like using cash or a prepaid travel card such as the Krungsri Boarding Card. Others mention the K Bank Tourist Debit card and True Money wallets as potential options. Overall, while it's challenging to use QR payments without local banking solutions, various workarounds exist.

The Krungsri Boarding Card by Bank of Ayudhya is a multi-currency prepaid travel card designed for cashless spending, online shopping, and ATM withdrawals abroad without the standard 2.5% foreign currency conversion fee

I have a K bank account & regularly use QR code for payment. Simply scan code from phone. But I also use credit card where possible like

stores, whitegoods etc. Saves transferring $$$ & I get good exchange rate with no fees. Refer attached card statement ($$$ are $Aus).

Moreta is good, just not with private N or personal accounts. But I can buy groceries, pay my electric bills, shop at the Mall, and use at big businesses, so it's ok, but there also fees when you make purchases and when you transfer funds!🤷🏾‍♀️

1. various shitty tourist solutions

2. True Money wallets

3. Bank account in Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore and in some cases China will have QR working in Thailand.

Realistically True Money (fully verified) is your best bet.

Alipay …you register your credit card account and can scan most everywhere…no Thai banks…

If you don’t have a Thai bank account registered to a Thai phone and a Thai address you can only scan those that accept AliPay. Most Thai QR codes are for PromptPay so won’t allow foreign sources.

I used Moreta but it only works on business QR codes and unfortunately a huge percentage of Thai businesses run their money through their private accounts.

TagThai leaves you exposed to poor exchange rates when topping up.

QR code payment goes via internet. How you want to do that without Thai Number at a random shop: no idea. Would work in a Lotus, they have WiFi but not in
****
as they mostly do not offer QR codes, and would not work at any mom&pop shop or street vendor.TRUE money works, Wise works since roughly 2 months. There is another option, which I do not remember ATM.

Deep pocket app lets you set this up for use in Thailand

yes, there is a local app that you can use to scan all of the QR codes. I don’t remember the name. But there’s one specifically for tourists so they can scan rather than exchange money. If you do a little research I’m sure you’ll find it.

I use a Singapore bank app, its QR code function only works when there is a total on the bill code, if it's a code where you input the amount it doesn't work. I guess a safety issue. I do use a Revolut card that the tap function works fine.

Dave Allen I believe most people want a card that they can top up from their home bank and use to pay by QR code TagThai must be topped up with cash which means you’ve got to draw cash first. Either you carry cash from your home country and exchange it or you use an ATM and cop the fees. I can see little advantage topping up a card with cash to pay by QR code when cash was just fine for the transaction.

You can open either a TrueMoney account or a WiPay Wallet account. I'm not sure if you need a local Thai mobile number or whether international numbers are accepted. If local, it's easy enough to get a Thai SIM when you're there.
