Can I travel to Thailand visa-exempt and apply for a 30-day extension if my e-Visa is rejected?

Hi I am UK resident living in Cyprus. I have applied for a sixty day tourist E-Visa online but through the Thai Embassey in Rome (as instructed). I’ve been reading through some of the common mistakes made and I’m worried my visa will not be approved and I will not have enough time to apply for a new visa. Instead than try again and make a mistake I was wondering is it okay to travel visa exempt and apply whilst in Thailand for the 30 day extension at immigration. Or will I be refused entry in to Thailand altogether because of original Visa rejection ? Hope this makes sense I’m just worried and unsure. Many thanks in advance

TLDR : Answer Summary
A UK resident living in Cyprus is concerned about their 60-day tourist E-Visa application submitted through the Thai Embassy in Rome. They are worried about potential rejection and whether they can travel to Thailand visa-exempt and later apply for a 30-day extension at immigration. Comments from the community confirm that entering Thailand visa-exempt is acceptable, and further applications for visa extensions can be made without issues stemming from an original visa rejection.

I can confirm one week ago that Qatar ticket counter in france asked to see my ticket out of Thailand before 30 day visa exempt deadline. (My 60 day visa request did not arrive in time.) Without departure ticket, they do not let you board.

if you can enter Thailand for 30 days on visa-exempt and if airline let you chack-in and board without proper visa AND outbound tickets later than 30 days are different things. If you have onward ticket within 30 days from arrival date, no problem. Other than that, you need to check with your airline clearly.

Unfortunately, airline policy is out of the scope of this group.

Thank you for this. My experience on 4 november at Toulouse ticket counter with french passport was as I earlier described. A supervisor for Qatar checked me in and confirmed that for boarding without visa, I needed to show a departure ticket under 30 days. I had one and was allowed to board. She said had I not, I would have been denied boarding.

It's simple.

If you try to board without a visa and your flight out of Thailand is more than 30 days after your arrival then the airline may refuse you.

This is because in the very unlikely event that Thai immigration refuse you entry the airline is responsible fly you back to the point of departure.

I've made a mistake every time I've applied for a visa as the requirement list is vague and full of things that don't apply to the visa type I'm after.

It's never been a problem. The embassy just contacted me asking for further info for the bits I'd missed or messed up.

I wouldn't worry.

okay great thank you. If it’s wrong I’ll just do visa exempt so no problems. I agree it’s a bit vague and not very clear in parts.

If your airline allows you to board without a return flight within 30 days you'll be fine at the Thai end.

I’ve got a return flight booked already with Qatar and I’ve checked as I’m UK Passport holder I can travel for 30 days exempt and can extend after that. I ment any record with Thai immigration sorry. Thank you

Just by a cheap onward flight that will show Quatar in the UK you have an onward flight you can get them so cheap and throw it away, then go to immigration and extend for a further 30 day’s extension 1900 baht, make sure wher you are staying register a TM30 for you and get a copy you will need it when you go for your extension.

Thai immigration will have no issues with your plan, as above the airline could refuse you if you do not have a confirmed flight out within 30 days. Emirates and KLM are fussy about that, others will have experiences with Qatar that they can share.
