Can I switch categories while using a DTV visa in Thailand?

Hello everyone, I have a question about the DTV visa.

Can immigration officers see whether a DTV was approved under the Soft Power or Remote Worker category?

When re-entering Thailand, do I need to show documents that match the original category? For example, if I obtained the visa through Soft Power, can I later show remote-work documents instead?

Also, what happens after three or four years? Do Soft Power applicants need to continue taking classes for five years, and do remote workers need to keep proving their employment throughout the visa’s validity?

I would appreciate hearing from anyone with actual experience.
Answer summary
The conversation discusses the nuances of the DTV visa in Thailand, particularly regarding the Soft Power and Remote Worker categories. Key points include the visibility of approved visa categories to immigration officers, the necessity of presenting corresponding documents during re-entry, and the obligations of visa holders to prove continued participation in activities relevant to their visa. Users point out that while immigration may not have detailed insight into visa applications, they do check visa classes at entry. The ongoing requirement for soft power students to take classes and for remote workers to demonstrate employment is debated, with suggestions that one can utilize the DTV for tourism regardless of ongoing activities.

No, immigration doesn't know unless it says so on the e-visa document you were given. If you received a visa sticker, there won't be any annotations other than "employment prohibited".

On a side note: In general everyone is allowed to ask stupid questions. As my personal mantra is: there are no stupid questions, there are only stupid answers.

However: do you really consider it smart, clever or somehow reasonable, to ask on Facebook, "how to cheat the system"?

For everyone with a warrant, your name is only two clicks away.

Yes, you need to be able to show the original documents, and have the required money on your bank account.

However, if you get asked or not is open to the officer.

In other words: no, you cannot just switch category. Keep in mind, a DTV visa is a very special one.

It is not a Non O where you can switch the reason of EXTENSION.
Christopher ***********
Christopher ***********
@Angelo **********
Agreed. There is no facility to switch between Workcation and Soft Power (or vice versa). That's because it's unnecessary. DTV is granted for one or the other. However, once issued it's applicable to both.

I know corruption exists in Thailand, but not everey IO is corrupted as you suggest here.

I think this is not a healthy discussion, all discussions with you end in suggesting acting illegal, you advise to commit fraude with your creditcard company when you get rejected for a visa without given reason, you suggest to do visa extentsions without being there in person and without complying with financial requirements, and now you suggest you offer money to IO when you do not comply to requirements at entry.

You might be right that with money you can do a lot in Thailand, legal or illegal, but that is not the purpose of this group.

Maybe you should read the rules and see that it can be a reason to be banned from this group.

If you don't prove what they ask you, they deny you entry.

Of course it is up to you to see that as they can't make you prove anything.

They don'r have to offer you the possibility to bribe them, in fact they can arrest you when you do and they don't like.
Luit *****************

Where did you get info that they only get exact information that is printed on the visa.

They most likely will not have access to all information, but certainly have some information.

And you are obliged to proof just what IO wants you to proof.

IO can't make you prove anything. What they can (and do) do is reduce your options to two. You can either go back where you came from or offer a bribe. They know you will choose whichever is the most economical for yourself.

@Christopher **********
I not forget anything, if you apply for a visa to visit Thailand for Muay Thai training that means when the training is over you don't need to enter the country again, unless you of course did choose the wrong visa.

If you want to visit for other reasons you just should have choosen another visa.

There are a lot of visa to choose from, when you did not choose the most appropriate visa that is your own stupidness.

If you need to have everyday life in Thailand, just choose a visa for that every day life and not a special purpose visa.

On that visa for everyday life you can do all the soft power activities without any problem, because they don't need you to have DTV.
Christopher ***********
Christopher ***********
@Luit ****************
You forget that nobody works
****
. Nor does anyone attend a Soft Power course every day. Both come to an end at some point and there is no requirement to be currently engaged in either. Everyone likes leisure breaks and most of us have family activities. Some have regular medical checkups, others go for a decade or longer without seeing a doctor. Normal everyday life goes on around Workcation and Soft Power. Not possible to separate. Unless there are exhaustive lists of both permitted and unacceptable reasons for entry by DTV holders then there are no restrictions.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Christopher **********
Nowhere is any official information specifying you can exchange different types of DTV visa when it is convenient for you.

Entering Thailand for medical reasons is bot a valid reason when you have a softpower DTV without a softpower activity, nor is a vacation a valid reason for entry on a DTV.

That is just trying to bend the rules for your convenience, but nowhere this is allowed in offical documents.

If you prefer to stay in Thailand for normal everyday life as you call it, you just should apply for a visa that is for normal everyday life and not a visa for a special purpose like DTV.

I don't understand what is so difficult to understand about that.
Christopher ***********
Christopher ***********
@Luit ****************
Special means it differs from other tourist visas. Special purposes of stay are listed as regards the application process. They don't have to apply at all times throughout the five year validity and neither do they have to apply to permit entry. You have previously been advised that Workcation and Soft Power are interchangeable. You appear confused about the medical purposes aspect. For DTV application purposes you need medical history and a treatment plan going forward. If you already hold a DTV you must use it for entry. I'm referring to a 'one off' entry where neither Workcation nor Soft Power currenly apply and I'm entering Thailand to seek medical attention. That would be as equally permissable as vacation would be as a genuine reason for entry under my DTV. In other words, part of normal everyday life.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Christopher **********
Where did you find that definition of "special"?

I did not see it anywhere else, so I think it is just your opinion.

In MfA documentation you can read the special purposes of stay and the extra requirements compared with other tourist visa, not that it permits you to perform remote work, which also is not true for all types of DTV.

The medical purposes you mention can make you eligible for a DTV visa, but can also be done without any visa at all, so what is your point?

A DTV is issued for a special purpose of visit, and IO can check at any entry if your purpose of visit matches your visa.

Most times they will not check, but they just can do so and when it not matches they can deny entry, up to you if you want to take that risk, but I guess you take the risk and trust bribing the officer will work.

P.S. Did you ever get a document with terms and conditions with your visa?

You just are expected to have knowledge of Immigratiion rules.
Christopher ***********
Christopher ***********
@Luit ****************
DTV remains valid for use until the end of it's five year term despite employment being terminated or course ending. Otherwise, it would be explicitly stated in the terms and conditions.
Christopher ***********
Christopher ***********
@Luit ****************
You can't be a special type of tourist. Special refers to the length of stays, period of validity and permission to perform remote work. In addition to workcation, soft power and vacation there could be other purposes for your visit e.g. needing to seek hospital tests/treatment, dental appointments and family duties. All those functions being part of normal everyday life.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Christopher **********
Where did you find that when your purpose of stay no longer exist you can use the visa the way you like?

You also think that in case you have a marriage vias you can stay while your marriage ended, or when your job ended your non-b keeps valid or when your study ended, your ED visa stays valid for use?
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Christopher **********
You say it yourself "special type", that means it is only issued for specific situation and not as a generic tourist visa.

You certainly are not free to choose your own purpose of visit with a visa granted to you or specific purposes.
Christopher ***********
Christopher ***********
@Luit ****************
Not BS. DTV is a special type of tourist visa. Therefore, by definition, also valid for touristic purpose. As no proportion of time which can be split between Workcation, Soft Power or tourism is specified then you are free to choose which you wish to apply at each entry.
Christopher ***********
Christopher ***********
@James *******
I understand there is no further requirement to enrol in subsequent qualifying courses. When not currently participating in the activity for which your DTV was issued (including Workcation) you are free to use your DTV (classed as a special type of tourist visa) for touristic purposes. Length and frequency of breaks/vacations isn't specified therefore they are open-ended.

why would they issue a five year visa then?
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Kevin ******
Simply because they want digital nomads a timespan of up to 5 year where they can come several periods to Thailand to work, just what digital nomads are used to do.

They normally stay in a country up to six months to prevent tax liability, then go to the next, do the same overthere and so on.

To prevent that this group has to apply for a visa every time again, they make the visa itself valid 5 years.

They did not make the stay 5 years to prevent use for people who want to live in Thailand, but when you read in this group, that measure just is not successful.

A lot of people here seem to think it is designed to live 5 years in Thailand.

The visa is 'meant' to be a 5 year tourist visa. Why does it matter whether the approved soft power activity does not last for 5 years? That's the rule set by the Govt when they started DTV.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 904 What you say makes no sense is completely nonsense.

Everywhere in the world you have a reason to visit a country, and then you select the appropriate visa for it.

I know here is a large group that cannot find the correct visa for their real reason of visit an the just choose a visa like DTV, try to make the application look genuine for the visa and when approved bend the rules so they can use it for the other purpoae. Obvious you belong to that group.When embassy suspects this behaviour they might ask extra info and it is the cause of a higher number of rejections.

Anonymous participant 904 The visa is pre-authorized by the consular from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is valid for 5 years. It does NOT mean you are entitled to enter for 5 years. Each entry is enforced by Immigration from Royal Thai Police not the consular or MFA. Full authority including visa cancellation is vested on the Immigration officer standing in front of you.

Again and again, the final authority to entry rest with the Immigration officer not you, me or any visa. Anything else is misleading people. If you are using a DTV to live and work here in Thailand (non remote work), that is ground for denial and cancellation. I am sure you will somehow question this too. You seem to be advising people or worst encouraging people to take advantage of any “vagueness” of the laws.
