Can I study and work remotely in Thailand on a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV)?

Hi Guys.

My application was accepted last Thursday in Cambodia. Workation. I was worried about being asked for tax returns etc but that never happened. Flew in last Friday and was asked no questions. Stamped in for 6 months.

I have a few questions;

1. I'm considering doing a Bachelor's degree, potentially at a university in Thailand, possibly online with Open University. Would it be possible to do that on a DTV?

2. If I did do the degree here, I'd be working very little (online, with an employer based in another country) and getting support from my Thai partner. Would I still be expected to pay tax on the little that I earn?

3. Am I expected to register where I am staying? It seems a bit pointless, as one of the reasons to get a DTV is to live a semi-nomadic lifestyle, moving from place to place. Who do I report this information to?

Thanks for your help so far....

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user recently received a DTV visa and has questions regarding studying a Bachelor's degree while on this visa, tax obligations from limited income, and registration requirements where they stay. Responses from the community suggest that a DTV visa may not permit full-time study and that an Education visa (ED) might be required for attending a university. It's also noted that taxes are only applicable on income remitted from abroad, and registering a place of stay is mandatory, typically through the homeowner filing a TM30. Users also mentioned the necessity of reporting to immigration if staying longer than 90 days.

it took exactly 10 business days. The process was very smooth. They didn't ask for any additional info. I just proved I had the cash for over 6 months

Technically speaking if doing a degree in Thailand you should be on an ED visa. It is classroom attendance?

I'm considering doing one online with Open University.

@Gee ****
my guess is that they wouldn't care and wouldn't know if you don't claim student status.

Agree. I would not even mention it on DTV or anywhere else.

Yes

You aren't allowed to work for a Thai entity or do any work reserved for Thai. Tax liability is only on funds remitted into Thailand from abroad.

Ensure a TM30 is filed where you live by the homeowner within 24hrs, also a 90 day report if you stay 90 consecutive days.

so if I receive funds into a UK bank account from a UK company, I do not have to pay tax on that?

I haven't had time to do the TM30 yet. Is there a penalty for doing that a little late and where exactly (in Bangkok) should I get that done?

@Gee ****
I think my answer was pretty clear about funds remitted to Thailand may incur tax liability. As well, the homeowner,landlord, guesthouse, hotel, you stay at should register a TM30 whenever you check-in or take up residence. It can be done online. Yes there is a possible fine. You can Google TM30 to find out more.

I see, I've been back since last Thursday and haven't had time to do TM30. Is there a penalty for this? Am I supposed to complete this every single time I spend a few days somewhere else?

Think you have to get an Education visa visa to study full time at a Uni. If you stay 90 days consecutively you need to file a report at your local immigration office.
