TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the concerns of showing a return ticket for a six-month stay in Thailand on a Single Entry tourist visa. It highlights that acceptance may depend on the airline and suggests that typically, Thai Immigration may not question travelers with a history of visiting Thailand unless they have stayed long-term on consecutive tourist visas. Additionally, there is a suggestion to consider applying for a multiple entry tourist visa to avoid the need for extensions.
Unless you have an extensive history of LIVING in thailand on back-2-back tourist visas or visa exempt entries you're highly unlikely to be questioned when stamping into the country.
You'll have more problems from the thai consulate getting a single entry tourist with onward travel so far past what you can get stamped in for.
IF you get the visa from the thai consulate AND you manage to check in with your airline, you won't have a problem once you get here
do you think it would be best to get a cheap ticket to a bordering country just to show onward travel instead of showing my return ticket as onward travel?

If you know you're staying for 6 months, why not apply for the multi entry 6 month tourist visa... no extensions required.
Even the 6 months valid Multiple Entry Tourist Visa gives you only 60 days of stay inside Thailand, than you can do a border run, stamp out, in/out neighbor country and stamp in Thailand for another 60 days of stay.
