Can I return to Thailand on a tourist visa without it expiring if I leave the country?

If I apply for a tourist visa, can I fly back to my country and re enter Thailand without the tourist visa expiring? I read that I need a re-entry permit for this.

If there is a family emergency I would have to fly back and forth. But it would be a shame to lose the tourist visa. Can you get the re-entry permit on short term?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A tourist visa to Thailand typically allows for a single entry unless specified as a multiple entry visa. If you leave Thailand, you would generally need a re-entry permit to return without losing the validity of your visa. However, considering the short duration of a tourist visa (usually 60 days), it may be more practical to opt for a Visa Exempt entry upon your return, which can also be extended if needed.

If it's a single entry tourist visa, as the name suggests it's good for one entry. If it's multiple entry you can come and go as much as you please during the validity of the visa

So indeed what

. That costs nothing and you even can extend your stay for 30 days for 1,900 ฿. Think it's of no use to take a re-entry permit.

Sorry but not understand what you want

. Suppose you have a Tourist visa for 60 days in Thailand. After 20 days you have to leave because there is an emergency for e.g. a week in the Netherlands. When you have a re-entry permit, there are still 60-20-7= 33 days left on your tourist visa. 1 extension possible of 30 days so you can still stay 63 days. Suppose you have the same situation without a tourist visa, then you have visa exempt 45 days + 1 extension of 30 days = 75 days. So really not understand 🤷‍♂️

"The clock" of 60 days does not stop when you leave with a re-entry permit !!

Only downside is that if I want to stay longer and want to apply for a tourist visa (after the visa exempt) I have to leave Thailand first and come back.

It would probably not be worth it as you only start with 60 days, probably better to get a Visa Exempt 45 day entry on your return
