Hi. I am currently on a TR Visa (after 11 years working here) which gives me 60 + 30 days.

The immigration officer told me I could leave the country and come back on one more TR visa in a calendar year so 180 days total.

Does this chime with other people's experience?

Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion addresses the experience of an expatriate currently holding a TR Visa in Thailand, stating that they were informed by an immigration officer that they could re-enter Thailand with another TR Visa within the same calendar year, allowing for a total of 180 days. The comments provide insight into immigration practices regarding tourist visas, highlighting that there is no strict limit on the number of tourist visas or visa exempt entries a person can use, although immigration officers might scrutinize frequent border runs. It is emphasized that these visas are intended for tourists and not for long-term stays, reinforcing the importance of obtaining the proper visa for one’s stay.

Time to close Stating rules is indeed not enough. The Visa Exempt Entry and the Tourist Visa are desinged for tourists, people who have a break from their jobs and come to see Thailand for a short period of time. But I understand that longer breaks are possible in modern times and you can be a tourist for many years, but for those people different types of visa are designed and believe it or not, Immigration officers are not stationed to carry suit cases. Look on Youtube for multiple series about Immigration in several countries, they all do the same job. Get the correct visa for your puspose and length of stay and the rules are applied, play games to avoid the correct visa and understand the game can be lost.

It also does seem to make a difference if there is time spent out of the country in between tourist visas or visa exemptions. Visa runs, as you mentioned, where you jump a border, get a visa, and come straight back, or a border run with an exemption, is a good way to attract the wrong kind of attention.

right...just stating the rules is not enough.

It is how they are applied.

BUT Immigration Officers do have a job description and suppose to ask people questions if they suspect abuse of visa rules.

Thanks. The immigration officer I spoke to (at DM) was nice and spoke good English. He said they aim to crack down on "visa run" guys but suggested 2 TR visas was ok (however also suggesting that that was the limit).

they were totally blowing smoke up your backside,

There is NO official limit to the number of tourist visas you can enter the country on in any time frame.

The only limit on entry is that TWO 30 day visa exempt entries by land in a calendar year rule

After 11 years of working in Thailand you should noticed it cost money to be here and tourists do not work inside Thailand even the ones who are allready several year present. We can only advice by telling and explaining the rules, what ever an officer decide when you hand over your passport is his/her decision.

There is no limit on how many tourist visa a person can use in 1 year or any other set time. There is also no limit on how many Visa Exempt Entries a person can use IF coming in by air, if using land borders than it is 2 Visa Exempt Entrys a calendar year.
