TLDR : Answer Summary
The original question revolves around the possibility of repeatedly leaving and re-entering Thailand instead of applying for a 6-month school visa, as well as inquiries about maximum stay durations. While there is no strict limit on how many days one can stay in Thailand through visa exempt entries and extensions, immigration officials may deny re-entry after multiple entries without a valid visa. The conversation highlights that staying on visa exemptions is not sustainable as immigration can eventually question your frequency of entry. Additionally, discussions touch on challenges with opening bank accounts as an expat, noting that having a non-immigrant visa simplifies this process.

What type of visa are you currently on?

Is it possible to apply for a bank account with a DTV Visa - I tried to apply with a entry Visa previously (60 days) but the banks would not entertain that unless I have a residents card?

Much quicker and less stress using an agent. You can open one by yourself but requires a lot of legwork to find one that will say yes.

A DTV is just a glorified tourist visa. It has no bearing on whether you can open a bank account. You can open a bank account on any visa status or even visa exempt. Except that these days it’s getting almost impossible to do without a non immigrant visa.

Some bank branches will let you with a residence certificate from immigration. Some will let you if you buy their inflated insurance policy. Most probably won’t so you’ll need to get hold of an agent to do it for you at a cost.

What is the end date that they stamped in your passport when you entered Thailand. That is when you must leave by.

There is no maximum amount of days you can stay as such. That said you are not going to be able to stay forever on visa exempt entries and extensions.

At some point the immigration officer you hand your passport to at a border will say enough is enough and either give you a warning to get a valid visa or flatly deny you entry.

How many times you’ll get away with is anyone’s guess as it’s up to that individual immigration officer. It could be 3, it could be 8 or more.

If you’ve maxed out your initial entry and extension and try to re-enter they may have issues after one time. Some seem to get away with numerous times.
