Has anyone been able to open a bank account in Thailand while on DTV visa? I would appreciate any tips / agent recommendation.
Summary so far
The consensus among commenters is that it is currently not possible to open a bank account in Thailand while holding a DTV visa. Many have reiterated that banks are prohibited from opening accounts for those on this type of visa, and past experiences suggest that any accounts that might be opened would likely be closed shortly after. Several users suggested alternatives, such as using digital wallets like True Money, but confirmed that traditional banking routes are not viable under these circumstances.

Why is this such a need to get when you can’t even make Thai currency without a work permit?

I just want to move my tax residency to Thailand because my home country tax laws are predatory and corrupt.

Anonymous participant thats an interesting case. I don't think getting a Thai bank account would solve that. You are technically supposed to be paying Thai taxes when you have stayed longer than a certain period. I would probably look into the concept of nomad residency. I for one wouldn't be in a rush to pay taxes anyway, its predatory and corrupt everywhere.

it does help. You need to spend 180 days or more and remit money in Thailand.

Rather pay taxes in this beautiful country than at home.

as long as your home banks don't shut you down for being there too long, I don't know why anybody cares these days...

It's prohibited by law now. If they found out, all the parties involved in the unlawful activities, will be punished, including bank managers and agents. Do not recommend!

Yes, people have opened accounts on a DTV, but it requires strategy. Legally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs classifies the DTV as a special type of tourist visa (for workcations/soft power). Because it is not a Non-Immigrant visa and does not come with a local Thai work permit, commercial bank compliance departments automatically default DTV holders into their "non-resident/tourist" risk category under strict Bank of Thailand (BoT) anti-mule account guidelines. Walking into a random branch with just a passport will almost certainly get you turned away.

However, success comes down to overcoming that compliance barrier through bulletproof documentation and references. Here is the step-by-step framework if you want to try to pull it off:

1. Why Banks Are So Strict (The KYC & Classification Context)

The Bank of Thailand holds branch managers personally liable if an account they approve turns into an illegal "mule account" used for grey-market transactions or scams. Because the DTV falls under the tourist visa family rather than a Non-Immigrant stay, branch compliance algorithms flag it as high risk unless you present heavy secondary proof of long-term local ties.

2. The Core Paperwork (Non-Negotiable Baseline)

Passport & Visa: Original passport with valid DTV stamp/sticker and entry stamp.

TDAC Registration & Address Proof: Your TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card) approval confirmation + TM30 notification receipt + a signed long-term lease agreement (12-month lease preferred; short Airbnb/hotel stays are rejected).

Certificate of Residence (COR): Issued by Thai Immigration or your country’s Embassy in Thailand.

Local Contact Details: Active Thai SIM card registered in your name (essential for biometric/KYC setup, SMS OTPs, and mobile app activation).

DTV Justification Proof: Supporting documents matching your DTV route (e.g., remote employment contract, foreign company registration, or enrollment papers for Muay Thai/cooking schools).

3. The Game Changers (How to Bypass the Compliance Red Flags)

To satisfy the manager's KYC obligations for a special tourist visa holder, you need to establish local stability using one or more of these leverage items:

A Thai Citizen Guarantor: The single most effective method. Have a respected Thai citizen (a business owner, property owner, or long-standing high-tier customer at that specific branch) accompany you in person with their Thai ID and Tabien Baan (House Registration) to co-sign a letter of recommendation/guarantee.

An Established Foreign Account Holder: A signed reference letter from a long-term foreigner who holds an account in good standing at that specific branch.

PA Insurance Incentive: Expressing interest in purchasing Personal Accident (PA) insurance directly through the branch (~2,000 to 6,000 THB/year) gives the branch a commercial incentive to take on the extra compliance workload.

4. Execution Strategy

Target Flagship Branches: Smaller sub-branches in shopping malls will default to "no" to protect their compliance scores. Target foreign-customer desks at main headquarters (e.g., Bangkok Bank Head Office on Silom Road, Bangkok, or major expat hub flagship branches in Chiang Mai or Phuket).

Complete Setup On-Site: Make the initial cash deposit (typically 500–1,000 THB) and ensure the agent configures, biometrically verifies, and tests the mobile application (K-PLUS, Bangkok Bank Mobile, etc.) before walking out the door.

Note: Because banks conduct periodic compliance audits, keep all your supporting residential and financial documents filed safely in case your account is flagged for routine re-verification.

LongTimeLivingInThailand it has nothing ni do with that. Regulations changed. Before 2024 even visaless tourists could get accounts without any trouble. Also, people on the ED (not ED plus) can't get accounts anymore now, allegedly.

@Elías *******
You’re spot on about the rules changing, but you're mixing up different types of ED visas!

The central bank's crackdown on unverified accounts explicitly ended the easy walk-in era. Major banks like Bangkok Bank and Krungthai updated their foreign customer policies to restrict tourist-category visas (which the DTV falls under) and non-formal language school visas. Because language school enrollments were previously misused for setting up unverified accounts, those language visa holders are routinely turned away at branch counters today.

Full 4-year degree students at major universities (and ED Plus holders) still get accounts opened via their university's foreign service desk.

So the point stands: if you are on a DTV or a language school ED visa, the old days of walking in with just a passport are over. You now have to clear those compliance hurdles using secondary proof like long-term leases, residence certificates, or a local Thai guarantor.
