Motorcycle licence while on a DTV visa

Hi all, I'm an Aussie passport holder. I'm bringing an international driving permit (IDP), but I'm only a car license holder at home.

Dose anyone know what the process is (or if it's even possible) to get a motorcycle licence in Thailand while in a DTV visa?

I'd be nice to bed able to rent a little moped while I'm in Thailand...
Answer summary
The conversation discusses the process of obtaining a motorcycle license in Thailand while holding a DTV visa. It is confirmed that it is possible to get a Thai motorcycle license with an international driving permit (IDP) and local training. Users share experiences from various driving schools, highlighting that the process typically involves taking a two-day course with both theoretical and practical components. However, it is noted that the IDP is only valid if one already holds a motorcycle license from their home country. There are also warnings about road safety in Thailand and the importance of obtaining the license through proper channels.

FYI - The IDP is invalid if you don't have a motorcycle license already at home. I did the Thai license, it was a a 2 day course, a short practical, and 40 question multiple choice test. You need a certificate of residency.

You can get a Thai Motorbike Licence which will cover you with police etc but be mindful that most Australian insurance won't cover you without a australian motorcycle license and and IDP for bike ( this is a different box ticked then just for car).

It takes one day and you have to give them your passport. But it’s well worth it to get a Thai license.

I'm on DTV and did the weekend course with Chiang Mai Driving School. It was a great program and I felt like I benefited from it. One day of classwork. One day of driving. 1000bt.

Yes it’s possible. Just start the process at the DLT or a riding school.

Getting a motorbike license is super easy, i got Thai license for both car and bike, i got them on tourist visa and it was super easy thru an agent.

Are you an experienced motorcycle rider already? If so , you'll be fine after a few days. Just don't drive with an Ozzy mindset. In Asia generally riding a motorbike is a completely different experience to what you will be used to in Oz.

Be prepared for absolutely anything to happen . A system does prevail on the roads in Thailand it's just that it won't be a system you are accustomed to.

A great many drunk drivers. Foreigners who have never ridden a bike before thinking they can and then 13 year olds driving around.

Good luck

Get a drivers license ideally with courses at

. Located in Phuket, Chiang Mai and two in / near Bangkok.

But also normal driving schools can do it.

I went to D-1 Driving School near Udomsuk BTS. Very smooth. You need to show up 2 days (each with ~8hrs theory video watching / driving practice). You need to take the exam and the driving test inside the school. The next day you can visit nearby DLT which has special counter for that school and have fast track service.

Only bad advice so far. Obviously don’t drive without a valid license. Get a motorcycle license the proper way. Depending on where you are located get license and proper training with
