Can I obtain a 60-day tourist visa to Thailand without providing proof of a return flight?

Hi all. I am US citizen and I am taking a month long tefl course in Thailand and then hoping to find a teaching job after that. So, I am wanting to start with getting a 60-day single entry tourist visa. However, I have no evidence of a return flight. The Thai Consulate General in Portland, Oregon appears to not require evidence of a return flight, but they do ask on the visa application for a departure date and length of stay. Does anyone know if I can get a tourist visa there with just putting in a random return date without any return flight evidence? Or please give me any other better suggestions?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A US citizen is looking to apply for a 60-day single entry tourist visa to Thailand to attend a TEFL course, but lacks evidence of a return flight. The Thai consulate in Portland may have less stringent requirements, possibly not needing proof of onward travel. Users suggest entering a departure date 60-90 days from arrival, and mention bus tickets as a form of proof if needed. Generally, different consulates might enforce the rules differently.

I don't know what it says but usually the language is more to the effect 'onward travel' The difference is that you don't have to leave by plane -- you just have to leave. I purchase bus tickets online $20 (I think 12go is the site). It serves as proof of onward travel.

Different consulates/embassies have different rules and enforce them differently. I show up with everything required and not had any problems to date.

This is the big one. Airlines will require you to show proof of onward travel and/or visa. The can potentially get stuck with the bill with flying you home if you are refused entry. *I think* the deal is either a visa OR all the requirements (funds, accommodations, onward travel).

Couple of fun facts.

Google voice allows you to port your U.S. number. You can make and receive U.S. call like normal from Thailand.

Thailand has no: flat sheet, strict rules, starburst, twizlers, or decent steak.. Found good roast beef.

Thailand has: awesome people, awesome beaches, awesome culture, 7up, monkeys, elephants, and muay thai.

I was in your same position just a few years ago. Came to Thailand to teach. 95% of my experiences have been great. I have no regrets. Best of luck to you.

Can you please explain why would I put it between 60-90 days and not say within 60 days?

thanks for the clarification

usually IF you have a valid visa in your passport they don't even ask about proof of onward travel when you check in. Their liability to lug you back if you're denied entry is ONLY if you enter thailand without a visa in your passport.

The airline not the visa application could give you problems without an onward flight booked.

Mark Stanley makes sense (y).

might as well put 60 days seeing as you're applying for a tourist visa that's good for a 60 day entry stamp

because you can get a 30 day extension from the immigration office inside the country for 1900baht on top of the 60 days you get stamped into the country on your tourist visa and the consulates know you can do that so are flexible about the date being between 60 & 90 days

In Portland you're dealing with a honorary thai consulate and as a rule they have FAR less stringent requirements. If they are not needing proof of onward travel (in the form of a ticket out of thailand) follow the advice given you by previous posters and just put a date 60-90 days out from your arrival date.

This Visa will give you 60 days of stay, which can be extended with another 30 days at Immigration. You can put a date on the form between 60 and 90 days after arrival.
