TLDR : Answer Summary
Bringing cash to prove your financial situation at Thai immigration is not acceptable. Immigration requires proof of funds to be held in a Thai bank account under your name, seasoned for a specified period depending on the visa type, such as the retirement visa. While it's sometimes necessary to show cash when crossing land borders, for visa applications, funds must be banked and documented. Some users suggest that a bank statement can suffice for visitors, but generally, original documents will be collected by immigration officers.

Let me put it to you this way. If you bring original documents to a Thai office, they will take it for their "records". What do you think they will do with that?

In most cases, a copy of your bank statement will suffice if you're just visiting.

Look at Bangkok Bank. They have a branch in NYC. You can open an account with them, and Thailand will recognize those deposited funds... if you transfer them into Thai Baht with them.

Is this something new? The NY branch is (or was) a wholesale bank only and doesn’t do personal accounts.

no money has to be in account for certain periods of times and they know people try to cheat the system that's why they changes for retirement visa 3 months before to basically 12 months before...

cash. This is more of a land border thing. Generally, entering by air, they don't ask.

If applying for various visas at the immigration office and needing to show proof, that money needs to be banked in a bank account.

No. It would be needed to be in a Thai bank in your name only, seasoned for how many months needed for whatever extension you’re applying for.

surprising to hear. I have never personally experienced it having flown to the country 50 times plus. Also never been required for any family or friends. I guess it’s more likely to happen nowadays with rules ever changing.

you mean to show immigration on arrival? If so very rarely asked for but have 20,000 baht or equivalent in a major currency if asked.
