Can I get a DTV visa for remote work in Thailand if my employer allows it?

Hi everyone! I’d love to get your thoughts on something. I’m based in Germany and work for a company that allows me to work remotely from many countries for up to 30 days (around 6 weeks) per year. Unfortunately, Thailand is currently on their list of restricted countries for remote work.

I checked with HR and they said that if I were to get the DTV visa, I *would* be allowed to work from Thailand. My contract states that my official place of work is Berlin, and the 30-day remote work allowance isn’t mentioned in the contract itself.

Given all this, do you think I stand a good chance of being approved for the DTV visa?

Thanks in advance for your input!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is considering applying for a DTV visa to work remotely from Thailand for up to 6 weeks per year, despite their company typically listing Thailand as a restricted country for remote work. Some commenters suggest that a formal letter from the employer confirming the ability to work remotely in Thailand would strengthen their application. Others argue that for such a short duration, alternative visa options like the tourist visa might be more suitable. The overall consensus leans toward the importance of documentation to support the visa application.

HR saying anything to you is not enough, you need a letter from the company you are allowed to work remote, preferable with Thailand mentioned or at any location.

When remote work is not mentioned in your contract, the embassy will ask you normally for that letter.

you wont need a DTV Visa if you‘re only staying up to 6 weeks in Thailand. You can manage that way easier. Just get the Visa Exempt on arrival (for german citizens)(currently 60 days). You could even extend it one more time for 30 more days. Which makes it 90 days

But honestly for 6 weeks per year you dont need dtv, just safe money and do the tourist visa

Anonymous participant 816 I need to show that visa to my employer otherwise I cannot work from there. And my company can easily check where I am working from. So I need to get it to be able to work from there even if it is just for 6 weeks a year.

it does not make sense to me either but these are the rules so I either get that visa to be able to work from Thailand or else I am not allowed to do it 😃

Anonymous participant that doesnt make any sense does it?

Youd need a letter from company stating thst they allow you to work from th

You will be fine if that 30 day rule is not mentioned anywhere in the contract.

Why would it be a problem if it was mentioned?

Anonymous participant because you don't need a 5 year visa if you can only work in thailand for 30 days per year. People have been rejected over this before so definitely don't mention it anywhere 😉

workcation for 6 weeks 5 years long is a much better reason for a 5 year visa, than doing Muay Thai training for six months and then stop the training. Of course technically that is illegal use of the visa, but it happens a lot. When you get a visa for 5 years, and only use it 6 weeks each year for workcation, it seems completely according the rules to me, but as always, embassy will decide about that.

Yes, you have a good chance of being a DTVer. Inc permission from your employer to work remotely in Thailand.

are you suggesting that I get a letter from my employer that I am allowed to work remotely and add it to my application? Is my contract not enough?
Andi ***********
Anonymous participant Yes, you need to include a letter from your employer that you can work remotely in Thailand. If not then they will request it and your approval is delayed.

Yes you will get it.

Thai immigration don't consult your companies HR department. If you want to get the visa it's up to you. Own it, make your life how you want. You only have one.
