TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, it is possible to obtain a 60-day extension after an initial 30-day extension under the visa exemption scheme in Thailand. You must first apply for a regular 30-day extension before being eligible for the 60-day COVID extension. To apply, visit the Muang Thang Thani Immigration office in Bangkok with the required documents such as your passport and address registration.

Keep in mind the new covid extension program (that started on Jan 26th and runs until March 25th) specifically states that new entrants to thailand on either a 30 day visa exempt or a 60 day tourist visa entry HAVE to take the one 'regular' 30 day extension FIRST before they can apply for a 60 day covid extension.

I guess you ask about the 60 day Extension of Stay based on being unable to travel.

You visit in Bangkok the Muang Thang Thani Immigration office, with copies of passport and address registration and apply. Advice is to have a plan B.

following this too as I am in the same situation. If I'm pretty certain that my embassy won't issue me such letter then is my only option to apply for covid extension in Bangkok?

thanks, so the letter from the embassy confirming I'm unable to travel is not mandatory at all?

Problem is that most Embassy do not provide a letter that people are unable to travel. Just visit your local Immigration Office but have a plan B ready.
