Happy new year!! New year, more travel, more visa questions ๐Ÿ˜€

I'm a UK national. My recent travel to Thailand has looked like this:

2018:

3 months visit sept - dec (had 6 month multiple entry)

2019:

3 month Jun - sept (had 3 month visa)

Border run in sept

1 month visit sept - Oct (visa exempt)

Left for 1 week

1 month visit Oct - Nov (visa exempt)

30 day extension until Dec.

My question is will I be granted another 3 month single entry for Jan this year? Does a new calendar year start a new number of entry allowances?

Thank you xxx

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, a UK national, inquired about obtaining a new 3-month tourist visa for Thailand in January, after a history of extended stays throughout 2018 and 2019. The comments discussed the complexities of obtaining a new visa given the user's previous entry history and highlighted that previous durations of stay may impact future visa applications. The consensus suggests that while entry allowances may reset in January, immigration officials may scrutinize the user's extensive stay in Thailand. It's recommended to prepare documentation, including proof of funds and onward travel, when attempting to re-enter Thailand.

you're asking questions no one can give you 100% answers on.

Will you be denied a tourist visa from the thai consulate in London? Dunno, apply online and see what they say, OR slog on over to Hull in person and get a tourist visa while you wait.

With your entry history and you "living here" on back to back tourist visas / visa exempt entries and extensions it's anyone's guess if you'll get pulled aside when you go to stamp into the country, questioned, asked for proof of funds, onward travel, lodging, OR denied entry outright.

This isn't the thailand of years ago where people could live here easily on v/e entries Or tourist visas with no issues, people with extensive histories of being here on v/e - tourist entries are getting questioned, and are getting denied entry.

Now will that happen to you, who knows. All you can do is hope for the best and be prepared with the 3-proof-ofz (proof of funds, 20K baht or the equivalent in CASH, proof of onward travel & proof of lodging.

As far as a land border, Nong Khai with Lao or one of the southern land borders are usually easy to enter at.

Good Luck, I think you have as much info as you're going to get...

You don't say where you are at the moment but you posted back in August asking questions about getting an METV, so would it be correct to assume that you are currently in Asia and are looking for the best embassy or consulate to visit for another SETV?

Your 2 land border 30 day visa exempt entries per calendar year reset on the 1st of January but that is no guarantee of entry.

Your entry history does not reset and will be visible to the immigration officer at the border. However, entry and visa histories are not yet visible to the embassies or consulates although anything in your passport is visible (and they *may* also have a record of past applications at that location but I don't know if this is the case).

There is no limit for tourist visa entries by any method or visa exempt entries by air but even though the law does not specify it, you should consider that if they feel that the person standing in front of them may be trying to live in Thailand on tourist visas the liklihood of denial increases.

There are limits to how many tourist visas an embassy or consulate will issue but these vary and the numbers appears to be in flux.

A number of immigration officers appear to be imposing a 6 months in the last 12 limit on tourists and as James Miller mentioned above you spent 6 months in Thailand in 2019.

An easy land border may be better than air since you will just have to walk back to the other country if you are denied.

Also, is there a preferred entry point? The obvious entry is BKK but I'm wondering if there's a better airport.

My original reason for my question was to see if I'd be denied a visa. If there's a chance my application will be denied then I'd rather go in on an exemption visa and leave once that expires. But my preference is to stay the 90 days.

I'm in the UK at the moment.

As you were living in Thailand for six months in 2019 using a tourist visa plus visa exempt entries and extensions, I doubt you will be able to obtain another visa, Tourist or Ed in SE Asia.

Are you still in Thailand? I think not as you are in UK at year end holidays.

You speak of a 3 month visa to enter on in January. Do you have a new Tourist Visa now?

With your history of six months in Thailand in 2019, be prepared upon airport arrival in Thailand, to be asked by Thai Immigration why you stay so long? And may be denied entry.

Have 20,000 Thai baht in cash in or its equal...your booking address and a ticket out of Thailand in 90 days

Yes the border run game resets on January 1st, so you may be lucky to do two plus two 30 days extensions. That may give you 4 more months in Thailand....for total of 7 months in 2020...if you are allowed entry on a new Tourist Visa.

We have had recent reports of some with history like yours being denied entry at land borders. Choose your border crossing carefully.

And 2020 may be a good time for a New Years Resolution to get the correct visa for your stay in Thailand.

Working is not permitted on a Tourist Visa or visa exempt entries. And being a Life Coach may not be eligible for a work permit. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Good Luck !

@James *******
thank you for your kind info!

- I don't have a new visa yet, was wondering if it was worth applying for one or whether I should save the money and go for 30 day stay with extension.

- Currently in UK, wanting to travel out mid Jan

- intention is to fly in, not land crossing

- tourist visa is the correct one as I don't have intention to work.
