TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is asking about extending their stay in Thailand after initially receiving a 30-day visa exemption and a 30-day extension. They want to know if flying to Malaysia and returning would provide them with another 30 days in Thailand. Comments confirm that this is possible through a 'border bounce,' allowing them to re-enter Thailand and qualify for another 30-day stay, with the option to extend again.
Yes drive to a land border crossing or get a taxi or bus . Whichever works.
Cross the border on foot or boat or bus. A rented car won't be allowed to leave.
Check which border is most convenient and ask again . Some borders sound a bit more faff than others.
My Mrs did a laos crossing a few days ago . Boat in , 50 mins processing, boat back all done .
Worth looking for a border run company in what ever place you plan on being in as they will know if 1 border is better than another for a hassle free run 👍
Cars can cross the border if they have permission (correct paperwork). Taxis can't cross the border in any case. Sometimes I see songthaews cross from Mae Sot to Myawaddy and Mae Sai to Tachilek, but those are the only exceptions to that rule. However, songthaews are more like buses than taxis.
You mean Savannakhet? I've had nothing but good experiences there (except for one guy who was a bit too forthright when explaining where the office to buy car insurance was).
Can you explain what you mean by the Lao side having "bad reviews"?
I’m just check google reviews in that border.. that’s all.. I just try to choose easiest border crossings.. I know Thai site easy but no experiences there in Lao ..
, Lao side is easy because people in this group don’t often stay for months like they stay in Thailand. We often just enter, pay a fee and go out, pay a fee and that’s it. Btw I hope you don’t need to apply for a visa to visit Laos but they just stamp in your passport letting you stay for 30 days. Did you check that?
, if your car has its own passport and you have all the required papers, you can drive through the border with a fee. If not, you can park near there and use the public bus or tuktuk to cross the border and back.
, so Sa Kaew with the border with Cambodia. If you do it, please update what the crossing is like. I think I read in this group that it’s not the border having friendly officers. I can be wrong.
Vilmos, in your case, you only stayed for 60 days so I guess that the officer at any border will stamp you in with no question. I live near Phu Doo border in Uttaradit Province and it’s quite easy there. The foreigner always goes with a Thai so they know that the foreigner lives there and doesn’t work without a work permit. If you like, you can take a train to Nong Khai, stay in Vientiane (capital of Laos) for 10 days and come back.
?? I've passed through Pho Doo several times, mostly on my own and of course by car. Never needed a Thai with me, nor would I want to be accompanied by a Thai, except if I was traveling with family (which I did once).
, the foreigner has stayed here for more than 12 months with visa exempt. Had 1 Covid extension. Was questioned recently twice after they saw so many stamps on the passport. No Thai is needed when crossing borders but now it’s better to cross with a Thai 😁😁
