Can I extend my stay in Thailand for another year with a Non OA visa using health insurance?

I arrived in Bangkok with a Non OA based on retirement (US) with a visa issue date of March 20th 2024 and visa expiration date is March 19th 2025. I have a single re-entry permit with a valid date until March 14th 2025

If I leave Thailand on March 3rd and return on March 10th from Vietnam by air, what date would my new stamp be good for? I have read somewhere that if I have a health insurance plan good for another year I will receive another year of validity on the same Non OA visa in Thailand.

Furthermore I read that I would NOT need to have 800,000 Baht in my Thai bank account.

Could you please confirm my thoughts that I can leave, return and get another year stay as long as I have health insurance.

Many thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user has a Non OA visa based on retirement that expires on March 19, 2025, and a single re-entry permit valid until March 14, 2025. They plan to leave Thailand on March 3, 2025, and return on March 10, 2025, and are seeking confirmation if they can receive a new stamp for an additional year based on having valid health insurance. Responses suggest that if the insurance meets necessary requirements and the individual exits and re-enters before the visa expiration, they should receive a new entry stamp for another year without needing to show funds in a Thai bank account.

boy you sure painted yourself into a corner with that single re-entry permit

GO to the immigration office and see if they can cancel it for you. Show them the eVisa print out that you have a valid multi-entry OA visa good until Mar 19th 2025 and you need to bounce out and back on it to activate a new year entry.

If you're going to try to coordinate getting your wife a trailing spouse yearly extension she doesn't bounce out and back with you, she won't get any more time doing that. YOU need to get the new year entry stamp (not a visa, just another entry stamp) and then she needs to get the year extension from the immigration office that matches that stamp

Would getting a multi entry re-entry permit fix my problem?

nope wouldn't do anything

The real question Sabi Pom is

Why would you have a single re-entry permit when the OA visa that was sold to you as a multiple entry visa? <- That means it has a multi-entry permit BUILT IN 😮 🙁

If these dates are correct, date of eVisa issue; Mar 20, 2024 and date of eVisa valid until; Mar 19, 2024 as long as you get a new year mandatory insurance policy for 100K USD (print that out) AND you exit/re-enter before the visa itself expires you will get stamped in for a new year entry stamp (or as long as the insurance is valid for up to a year)

You won't show proof of funds because you're not extending anything, you're simply using another entry on a valid multi-entry visa

looking at my passport stamp I received at the airport it says 30 March 2024 and 14 March 2025

and it should have thai written on it that says that stamp was issued up until your insurance expires

AND

your eVisa should also have a remark that lists the expiration date of your insurance

The current entry stamp you're here on doesn't affect anything as far as getting back in, it's the validity of the VISA itself (which you say is good until Mar 19th 2025)

What messes you up as far as bouncing out and back to get a new year stamp is that single re-entry permit that is linked to the current entry you have, 🙁

You come back in BEFORE the 14th Mar 2025 passes and you'll get stamped in only UNTIL that date 😮

You gotta let that re-entry permit expire and then you can enter the country on the currently valid OA eVisa (with the proof of a new year insurance)

When I got the visa I paid for a multi entry visa at the embassy but when I went to Bangkok immigration the very first time they told me I needed to buy a re-entry stamp and asked what date I wanted to use. I admit I was very confused by this and didn’t ask questions and as it turned out I paid for a single re-entry permit instead of the multi.

You'll need to leave Thailand and re-enter sometime between the 15th and 19th of March 2025 with a years worth of insurance.

@Sabi ****
did they give you a receipt? You either got really bad advice from that officer, or he's a 1000 baht richer.

I’m very thankful and sorry to have to ask again but I’m having a disagreement with my spouse regarding the dates. Embassy stamp for visa shows 20 March 2024 valid until 19 March 2025. We arrived in Bangkok on March 30 with an expiration date of 14 March 2025 on airport stamp. Re Entry stamp from immigration is good until March 14 2025. I should leave anytime but come back after March 14th and before March 19th with insurance papers and I will get another year stamp. Correct? Many thanks. Does any of this affect my spouse and her Non O trailing spouse visa?

@Sabi ****
correct (y)

Sorry, that was totally bad advice from bangkok immigration 🙁

The visa clearly says across from No of entries - multiple <- that means you can go in and out all you want for the validity of the visa and you would be stamped in for a year OR up to the validity of the insurance

Get a new year insurance policy, print it out, exit the country, come back AFTER this single re-entry expires but before the VISA itself does and you'll get stamped in for another year (or as long as that new policy is for up to a year)

If you did indeed by a needless single re-entry permit that is valid until the 14th of March 2025, you need to stay OUT of thailand until that stamp actually expires 😮

That's because IF you come back while a re-entry permit is in effect they'll stamp you in on the stamp tied to that re-entry <- so you'd get stamped in ONLY until the 14th again

Which I take it was the date you actually got stamped in for when you arrived here a year ago (and is the date your insurance expires which would be written on the visa and usually under the entry stamp)

So you want to leave thailand anytime BUT you wanna come BACK to thailand AFTER March 14th 2025 so that re-entry stamp (if you really have one) is expired and you get stamped in on the eVisa

While at immigration I wasn’t given a choice in getting the re-entry permit, I was told flat out that I needed to buy / pay for one so I honestly don’t know how I could ask them to remove / cancel the re-entry permit. I was also told because it was single entry if I leave Thailand my spouse visa is canceled. Do I need to try and get a multi re-entry permit at immigration?

Sadly this thread is going around in circles and I'm gonna close commenting right now, I've messaged you about this, check your message requests.

We can re-open it after we talk on messenger

@Sabi ****
you just go to the section that issues re-entry permits and ask them to cancel it by showing you HAVE a valid Multiple entry OA visa you want to use to exit/re-enter on

I think there was a lost in translation somewhere, because your WIFE would be the only one who'd need a re-entry permit after she got the trailing spouse extension because leaving the country without one would cancel her stamp.

You certainly didn't need one, and seeing as you already HAD a valid visa that was multiple entry you shouldn't even have been doing anything visa wise at the immigration office other than getting your wife a trailing spouse extension that matched yours and maybe getting her a re-entry permit

Thank you, was confused by the wording. What stamp would my spouse get at airport upon return. She came into Thailand on Non O at the same time as me and then extended using the trailing spouse. Her stamps and visa dates are the same as mine.
Tod *********
@Sabi ****
she would have to get a new trailing spouse extension she couldn't bounce out and back with you because she'd lose her extension because you have to stay out until that re-entry runs out and that's after her stamp runs out too, so if she leaves she's stuck, and if she stays she'd run on overstay

That dang re-entry permit you bought is what is messing you up. Go to the immigration office and see if they can cancel it. Then you could do your normal trip planned earlier, BUT she couldn't, she has to stay in the country and wait for you to come back on a new year entry stamp and then you go with her to get her extension based on trailing spouse like you did last year
