Can the first extension of a Non-O be for a different reason than the issuance of the actual Non-O?
Answer summary
The regulations regarding the extension of a Non-O visa in Thailand suggest that generally, the first extension must be for the same reason as the initial visa issuance. Traditionally, sticker visas specified the purpose, enforcing this rule. However, with the introduction of eVisas, the requirement appears to have some flexibility, as some eVisa documents may not explicitly state the reason for issuance. Real-life experiences indicate that some individuals have successfully extended their visas for different reasons under certain conditions. It is highly recommended to check directly with local immigration authorities for the most accurate guidance.

A few years ago I entered Thailand on a Non-O Marriage visa and had no problem to make my first Extension after 90 days as Retired. No questions or issues whatssoever, this was in Udon Thani.

do you remember if yours was an eVisa or a sticker visa and if it said on the visa if it was for marriage?

It was NOT an E-visa. The display was in the form of a Sticker from the Embassy in my country and it only says NON_IMM O, nothing about which category otherwise.

Some say "employment prohibited" that means it is not issued for marriage.

The eVisa PDF may indeed show the reason a non-O visa was issued, :O

Ahh, the question that can't be answered.. :P :O ;)

Before when embassies issued sticker visas they put the reason you have the visa on the sticker and with those you had to get the first extension for the same reason that the visa was issued.

Now with eVisa some consulates don't put the reason a Non-O was issued on the PDF which means you could probably apply for any extension you wanted to

Whereas if you get the Non-O issued inside thailand you get the extension for the reason they issued it, there is no wiggle room on that at all.

All you can really do is GO ask your immigration office if they'll let you apply for an extension for a reason other than the one you used to get the Non-O from a thai consulate

in 2008 I applied for a 90 day visa based on marriage, when I went to extend it, I took my wife with me and applied for an extension based on marriage. The officer gave me an extension based on retirement, and I have been on that ever since.

When you enter Thailand with a NEW freshly bought Visa from an Embassy, somehow that visa is known by the Immigration Officer after scanning your passport.

If the visa is known, why is the purpose of the visa unknown in the computer system?

Could it be that a confirmation e-mail is slightly different that the real visa details in the computer database?

they know you have a Non-O but I do not believe that the officers at passport control OR immigrations know WHY you got it issued.. Unless it's noted on the visa itself

RTE London puts the reason in the Comments field written in Thai

I know they put those comments when people buy OA visas to show when the mandatory insurance runs out but I wasn't aware they put the reason you got the Non-O visa (retirement/marriage to a thai) in the remarks
