TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual inquired about securing a marriage visa extension until May 2026, given that their passport expires in May 2025. Community responses suggested that while an extension could be granted until the passport's expiration date, it would be advisable to renew the passport before applying for the extension to avoid limitations on the subsequent visa terms. Renewing the passport early would allow for a full one-year extension instead of a limited extension matching the passport's validity.
Isn't advised to renew your passport 6 months in advance

Renewing the passport is inevitable. Get it done before this September, that way you can get the full one year extension.

Yes but The best way is to apply for a new passport before the visa expires. You can do it 6 months maximum before then. You can transfer the passport after that. You can extend the visa normally for 1 year. If you do not apply for a new passport, you will get a visa according to the passport validity, which is 8 months from September to May.so you lost 4month π

You will get a extension till may if your passport is valid till may. If thats what you want you not need to do anything. But if a extension till september, for a full year is better then renew your passport early before september. Think about proof of funds issues...

Just renew the passport early

You never know. It is up to the Immigration Officer.

I would renew passport before the visa⦠Otherwise they would only allow the visa to the 6 month before expire of passports

A friend of mines passport ran out during his retirement visa and he had to go to immigration to get it transferred to his new passport, so maybe some visas can be transferred and some cannot, may be advisable to speak to a few agents to see what they say about it
You cannot be issued a normal Visa or Extension beyond the expiry date of a passport. I think your friend got a new passport as the old one was nearly full so in this case he would get the full Visa or Extension and had the stamps transferred to the new passport. [DTV, LTR and other non-normal Visas can be issued beyond the expiry of a current passport]
ok so just an update from my friend on how it happend, "so how it happened for me was that the year before i was only allowed to to get a visa for 10 months. _But_ I brought my passport forward so had the visa still on my old passport. Presenting old and new together were sufficient for the remainder of the 90-day to be accepted."

So Graham you are correct in that they won't issue a visa beyond passport expire, but it appears if you get lucky they may put the remaining time in your new passport, maybe there is a time limit on this or maybe it's because you wouldn't get to pay a reduced amount for a shorter visa so technically the are supposed to do this but just don't advertise it, I don't know the answer to that, but the possible chance/option is good to know about I'm sure
a good friend has done this recently, he got a new retirement visa in Feb 2024, his passport was due to expire in October 2024, he got new passport from BKK and the immigration transferred the remaining months to new passport and he renewed as normal in Feb 2025, so maybe SOME visa can be transfed, or maybe they change the rules, I don't know I can only tell you what I know happened

I renewed my UK passport while here in Thailand. There was no need to go back to the UK to process it.

Yes, if you apply for a 1-year extension but your passport is not valid that long, then your extension will only last until your passport expires. Just know what that means for the future. Your new annual extension every year going forward will be in May, and you'll need to make sure your bank account is at the proper amount to apply for an extension in February or March since you'll be applying for your extension much earlier than normal the next time.
