TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you can convert a 30-day visa exemption stamp to a Non-Imm B visa without leaving Thailand, provided the company you will be working for can meet the strict documentation requirements. This process must be initiated while you still have at least 15 days remaining on your current visa. Typically, the application process for the 90-day Non-B visa takes about 14 days for consideration at the immigration office.

It is a government university - so should be OK?

, Vist Immigration with the papers you have, worst that can happen is that they tell you that you need more papers. Than you go back to HR and provide them for next visit.

, keep in mind that thai consulate in Phnom Penh is NOT a user friendly consulate and the soonest you'd get your passport back IF they accepted your application and documentation would be 3 days from the day you turn it in.

I'd get your visa stuff sorted out BEFORE you contemplate a holiday in Cambodia.

Just holiday to Cambodia don't solve the problem, you still need school paperwork to apply for the Non Immigrant B visa there.

Or maybe I should keep my mouth shut and go on holiday to Cambodia?

They haven't suggested it. I will need to talk to HR to find out if it is feasible

if they're telling you they can do it, they most likely can.

Most schools or uni's that can't pull it off will just give you paperwork and tell you to go to a thai consulate in another country to get your 90 day single entry Non-B.

It totally depends on whether the company you're going to work for can meet the documentation requirements at the immigration office (which are far more stringent than getting a Non-B from a thai consulate).

IF they can, you'd apply for the 90 day Non-B at the immigration office when you have 15 days or more remaining on your current stamp. That's because it goes under-consideration for 14 days before you go back and get the Non-B visa and the new 90 day stamp inked into your passport

I was told by a visa agency when I went in to see them. As long as you do it before you have less than 2 week left on the stamp
