Can I change my visa category from soft power to workcation in Thailand?

Hi everyone! I know these things aren’t set in stone and could change at any time depending on what Thailand decides with DTV rules or visa checks, but I wanted to ask a couple of questions based on how things stand right now. I’ve searched the group but couldn’t find solid answers.

1. If I applied under the “soft power” category, is it possible to later change the reason (for example, to “workcation”) if the rules get stricter? Maybe through a 180-day in-country extension or reapplication?

2. Is there any noticeable difference between applying under “workcation” vs. “soft power” once you get the visa? Like, is the reason actually written on the visa or listed anywhere officially?

3. If I apply with “workcation” and get denied, would I be able to re‑apply using “soft power” right away? If so, could I re-apply at the same embassy?

Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquired about the flexibility of changing visa categories in Thailand, specifically from 'soft power' to 'workcation', and the implications of rejection when applying. Responses confirmed that once granted, a visa typically doesn’t require proof of the initial purpose unless extended in-country. Users clarified that changing categories may be possible during an extension and that applicants can reapply at any embassy after a denial.

You have a 5 year visa, the only time you'd need to requalify is if you did an in country extension, and there is no reason why you couldn't qualify/change under a different category such as soft power or any of the digital nomad categories, should you decide to do an in country extension. At this time and for the foreseeable future there are no checks upon entering Thailand that you are engaged in any activity that initially qualified for the visa. You can reapply after rejection at any embassy or the same embassy as long as you are in the geographical area covered by that embassy for the same or a different category. It doesn't matter what you initially qualified for or what is remarked on the visa given to you by the MFA.

in country extension is not requalifying, they only check if you still comply with the requirements. Immigration can ask at any moment they want, ask you to show you comply with all the requirements. Switching between category is not documented, so you should request immigration about that. Strictly you do not comply to the purpose for which you where approved when you change, so it could be considered invalid.

Once granted you do not have to prove it again UNLESS you try to extend in Thailand.

As long as you bounce the visa remains intact for 5 years, without further scrutiny.

At least for now anyway, you never know what the future holds.

@Chris ******
you have to prove when immigration asks, when you break rules it always is a risk.

1. I don't believe so

2. For some people it shows on the visa and for other it doesn't. Either way immigration will know.

3. Yes.

Edit: updated my answer to the second question.
