What are the differences between the "Workcation" and "Soft Power" versions of the Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand?

Has the government still not confirmed the difference between getting the "Workcation" and the "Soft Power" versions of the DTV? If someone gets a DTV for a business in 3 years will they need to show its still operating or will Soft Power DTV holders need to show they are still enrolled in a Soft Power activity down the line? If the registration part is different but everyone gets the same visa then wouldn't everyone just get the Soft Power version because its easier if you dont have to prove you still do the Soft Power?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses uncertainties around the differences between the "Workcation" and "Soft Power" versions of the Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand, particularly concerning whether holders will need to demonstrate ongoing compliance with their visa conditions after a certain period. While some believe that the Workcation visa may be easier to manage due to its requirements, others assert that Soft Power holders must prove continued participation in designated activities. There are varying opinions on how extensions will be handled, with some suggesting that border runs could be a simpler solution for extending DTVs.

Like all visas, You only have to show your credentials again if you are trying to do an extension of stay, Just leave the country and come back its so much easier, the most they will ask you in reentry is if your address is still the same , i suggest take a weekend in vietnam
Dave ********
I dunno about 3 years from now, but I left the country and came back, (before my 180 days were up), and nobody asked me any questions about renewing my muay thai course.
Steve *******
I got mine for workcation, as I work remotely.

But my visa, that I got in August, has "Employment Prohibited" where it says workcation on everyone else's e-visa 😅
Jeremy *****
And another moron 😂😂
Erin ******
Why does this bother you? Everyone has their own way, everyone should mind their own business. Soft power Dtv owners are no different from you same place and same conditions so what bothers you?
Greg ********
@Erin *****
But the conditions are not exactly the same though are they?
Erin ******
Exactly the same! Everyone pays for rent , food, transportation etc. and Everyone got same visa during 5 years. So ? If you are mentioning about extending rules border run for all of us isn't it ?

I wonder too... the future will tell I guess.

You're so wrong. Not everyone is "getting Soft Power version" (I got Workcation, and so did many people here). Workcation was actually super easy for me because you know what: I ACTUALLY WORK REMOTELY and can prove it and will be able to prove it for the next 5 years! Good luck with that if you went with a "Soft Power version".
Luit *****************
@Winston ***********
same here, allthough I might retire within 5 years...

If you have a DTV on soft power then just show your updated 6 months schedule and classes that's what it's designed, if you are actually using the DTV correctly and enrolled in a class nothing to worry about, if you are trying to wing it and blag then you will get caught out and possibly the DTV cancelled

@Marcus *******
you may have got it for dental implants for example. They were happy to issue the visa at the beginning why would they then insist on further dental treatment? It doesn't make any sense

I've had toothache for 5 years 😂

Honestly, who’s going to take classes for 5 years straight? It’s ridiculous and no one expects it. Just border bounce every 180 days for 5 years and it matters not.

@Dany *******
You’re wrong: the DTV is granted based on meeting one‑time criteria—such as financial proof and evidence of remote work or cultural activity—not on ongoing participation. Unlike the Education visa, which requires continuous enrollment and regular documentation, the DTV does not mandate that you maintain active engagement throughout its five‑year term. Random checks may occur with any visa, but the DTV isn’t designed for continuous monitoring. For definitive guidance, I suggest you speak with an expert lawyer on this matter.

well, i am not so sure. Thai imigration are known to change the rules of the game quite often. There are the "real rules" and the "unspoken rules". I myself experienced the troubles about getting my NON O visa extension. I understood they would not give me my renewal whatever i do, when they sent me back home for the fourth times because the pictures i was supposed to show didn't suit them for totally stupid reasons (need to wear long trousers, in the kitchen, on the sofa, show the house number, draw a map of the aera where the house is located (no you can't print Google map...) ect ect . DTV visa could very well be revoked or they can request any other dumb rule making it impossible to keep using it because they found this visa not suitable anymore for the country.
Sean *******
@Bruno **********
Switch to a DTV and you won't have to visit an Immigration office for 5 years. Take a picture with long pants on the sofa. 😂

@Sean ******
yes, i applied a week ago in HCM 😉

You are wrong. Even with an approved visa, Thai immigration officers at the airport or land border have the authority to deny entry if they believe you do not meet the conditions of your visa… it will most likely get checked in the future. even the MFA reps said in previous calls that you would need an ongoing activity. is there a proof check right now? no. but there will be random checks down the line, very surely… if the visa requirement was a one-time criteria then why do you need to proof it to immigration again when you extend the visa? the same ministry (immigration) that decides about letting you enter or not into the country… they can easily ask you questions and then good luck.. of course you need ongoing activity to be compliant with your visa…

i dont need a lawyer. thanks. i have a DTV for workcation and i even extended it inside thailand.

@Dany *******
If you're worried about being questioned use a visa agency for a border run or safe entry at the airport.
Dany ********
@Sean ******
i am not worried at all and i wish everyone to have an easy life with their DTV without any checks… we are just pointing out to the obvious… its like sitting for 10 hours in a restaurant and only ordering an initial coffee. surely at some point later someone will ask you for the reason of your stay…. same with the education visa in the past where many many people have been questioned at the border. believe what you want. but not a single officer will tell you that you are doing it correctly when you actually ask / or get checked. ;)
David ***********
@Dany *******
While it’s true that immigration officers retain the authority to question entrants, the DTV is structured so that you prove your eligibility once—through financial evidence and proof of employment or cultural activity—and that initial assessment remains valid for the visa’s duration. The extension process is meant to confirm that you still meet the required financial criteria, not to demand continuous revalidation of daily activity. Spreading disinformation only confuses the discussion and helps no one; for clear and accurate guidance, it’s best to rely on official sources or consult an expert lawyer.

You'll learn that there are few people on here who think their DTV is superior to others. Because they applied via workation and not soft power. They're wishing so hard for Immigration to check everyone on entry with a DTV. Very sad.
David ***********
@Sean ******
I appreciate the heads up, Sean. It’s as if belittling fellow DTV holders somehow makes one feel more secure—quite unnecessary and frankly sad.

you sound like someone is trying to take away your lollipop 🤣🤣🤣 everything will be fine and we will see how the future unfolds. just dont come crying when you actually dont comply with the visa regulations and someone starts questioning you at the border 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

@Dany *******
Next year at Krabi Immigration for DTV extension. They will ask people to stand on a spacehopper and juggle three coffee cups. Better start practicing pal.
Dany ********
@David **********
most likely there will be checks in the future…
David ***********
@Dany *******
Doubtful. No one is taking thousands of dollars in cooking classes every year for 5+ years. And some people are too old / injured for Muay Thai.
Dany ********
@David **********
what is doubtful? for the visa you would have to comply with the requirements at any time during the 5 years. that means ongoing activity. There will be random checks at immigration in the future. very sure… same in the past with education visa for example. where they sometimes wanted to see extensive documentation and questioned you for a good while… it happened in the past and it will happen with the DTV. its more likely than not that random checks will happen.
Greg ********
To get an extension in country you have to show soft power continuing. The Immigration Officer on entry has every right to ask you to show you are still doing it. Now it is to be seen what checks are actually carried out upon re-entry. Some DTV holders may prefer to do a border run with a company that facilitates those or pay an agent for "Safe entry" at airport. Nobody has a crystal ball for what might happen in the future.

I've seen the DTV with mentions of the specific type you're getting (Muay Thai, workation, etc.). These are the most recent ones. And yes, as Sean mentioned, you'll still need to show an ongoing activity if extending in Thailand, which essentially sets the expected general requirements for the soft power by immigration.
Sean *******
Ask again in 3 years. It's easier to extend in country if you applied via workation and you're still working. Those on soft power would need to book more courses or appointments.
