I have a Non-immigrant OA Visa. Is it possible to cancel it before the year is up & apply for an O. Or is it at all possible to convert from an OA Visa while in Thailand to a Marriage Visa.
Answer summary
It is generally not possible to convert a Non-immigrant OA Visa to a Non-O or Marriage Visa while remaining in Thailand. If you wish to switch to a Non-O visa, you will have to leave the country, allow your OA visa to expire, and then apply for the Non-O visa from abroad. Advice suggests that applying for a Non-O visa based on marriage or retirement involves specific financial and documentary requirements, which also vary depending on the visa type and one's circumstances.

Country of passport. Suggest you contact your local embassy
You can only have one visa at a time. Leave Thailand. Apply for the Non-O on the evisa site. They will tell you you have a valid visa already and give you 2 choices.
1. Cancel the Non-OA and continue with the Non-O application
2. Cancel your Non-O application.
After the Non-OA is cancelled, if you download it again from the evisa system you'll see cancelled stamped on it.
Now if you are on an extension of stay then you're just applying for a Non-O and enter on that.
I went through the process a number of years ago. I Went to Vietnam for a week without obtaining a re-entry permit. Entered Thailand on a visa exempt (then 30 days). Extended another 30 days and then applied for a non-O 90 day based upon marriage. The 365 day non-O was issued approximately one month before the 90 days expired. I did however convert to a retirement visa when renewing a year later. Personally I find it far less hassle and I'm in the fortunate position of showing my income through a avidavat.
How to change from OA to O visaThere are two main ways to go:Change inside Thailand (Recommended if valid time remains): You can apply to change your visa status at a local immigration office in Thailand. This should be done at least 30 days before your current OA visa expires. Leave the country and apply (Border Run): Some choose to leave Thailand, apply for a 90-day Non-O visa at a Thai embassy in a neighboring country, and then return to extend it to 1 year. Requirements for "Marriage Visa" (Non-O) 2026 To change to a Non-O visa based on marriage, you must meet the following financial and documentary requirements: Finances (choose one of the options): \(400\,000\) THB deposited in a Thai bank account in your name no later than 2 months before application. A monthly income of at least \(40\,000\) THB (must be supported by documentation). Documents: Marriage Certificate (Kor Ror 3) and Marriage Registry (Kor Ror 2). Copy of your Thai wife's ID card and house book (Tabien Baan). Photos of you together in your shared home (both inside and out).Map of your residence.Valid passport.Step-by-step processPreparation: Make sure you meet the financial requirements and have all the paperwork ready.Visit Immigration: Go to your local immigration office to pick up the "TM.7" form (for extension).Submission: Submit the application. It costs about \(1\,900\) THB for the extension. "Under Consideration": You will usually get a stamp that gives you 30-60 days to wait while they check your application.Final approval: After about 30 days, you return to get the full 1-year visa stamped.Re-entry Permit: If you are leaving Thailand during this year, remember to buy a re-entry permit (\(1\,000\) THB single, \(3\,800\) THB multi) to prevent your visa from expiring.
OHH OK , GOT IT THANKS . It's A 90 DAY Non-O Visa . Then a One year Extension based on Retirement or marriage . Which one does "NOT " Require Medical Insurance ??
Do not get reentry permit. Let Visa expire. Then apply foe Non O based on retirement. If you have the 800k in bank before you leave even better. If not get Non O based on retirement. Then get that 800 k in bank immediately upon return. . Then get your extension.
Sean Franjesh You need to invalidate the stay permit that you got stamped in, when you entered Thailand on the 365-days Non-Imm-O/A Longstay Visa, before you can apply for another visa type. . . . . Marianne Holmen . . . . . what Sean meant to say is, during the first year of the O/A Visa validity, there is a multi re-entry included, and this means you cannot just invalidate the O/A stay permit by exiting Thailand, and Immigration would not invalidate it, either. That is why you have to exit shortly before the visa validity expires, wait outside of Thailand until the visa validity has expired, because from that moment on you have no more re-entry permit and the "admitted stay" stamp in your passport has also become invalid. NOW you can either apply for a 90-days Non-O visa outisde of Thailand, OE enter visa exemot and apply on Immigration for the "change of visa type" to the initial 90-days Non-O visa
If you have a reentry permit do not use it reenter on visa exempt. Assuming you already have the Thai bank account with correct amount in it for right time. Yes go to immigration apply for Non O 90 day then 1
at least 15 day before the 90 days expires apply for 1 year non O. Get a list of your immigration officers requirements. Non O is relatively simple Non O marriage has several more hoops to jump.
Graham Seal non 0-A does not give you multi entry. You can apply when you renew your visa for a multi entry permit, 3,800 Baht. Or get a single entry visa before you leave I think 1,000 Baht. I opt for the multi entry as I leave Thailand regularly. Have been doing this for the past 12 years.
Well … then let the Non OA expire before you come back , Do you have a Bank account here ? It’s necessary for the First Non O . Marriage to deposit the money , 2 month before you apply for marriage…otherwise you will pay a huge sum to an Agent …. BUT I have a friend who tried to open one now on the same reason and had horrible problems…. Here on Phuket the Banks are now very strict !
I switched from non-B to a non-O in Thailand. I know its not what you asked, but it may be possible. Best ask an agent, they seem to be able to achieve most things.
Martin Baker both extensions were out of a Non-O visaclass. That's why before the 1-year extension expires, you can apply for a change of the "REASON" - from reason employment to reason retirement or family. However the Non-O/A visaclass is a different visaclass than the Non-O visa classes. You cannot change the reason between, but must first invalidate the OA stay permit before you can apply for another visaclass
You can change the reason for staying on a Non-OA from retirement to marriage. This can be done by yourself and wife at immigration.I am 100% correct as I have done this.
Gerar Teuben believe me I think you're right but there is information contrary to that on the internet that says it's possible I'm going to ask immigration in Bangkok when I get back
No, you have to leave Thailand and apply again for a O-visa and have to go through the whole retirement visa application steps again: 90 days O, then 1 year O. Changing OA to O visa within Thailand is Not possible.
John Tidona there is a non-immigrant O based on retirement and there is a nonimmigrant O based on marriage. I had a non-immigrant O based on marriage two years ago and I had to to a border run to clear it, come back into Thailand on a tourist visa exempt, have the ฿800K in my Thai bank account, then use a TM86 to change visa types to retirement from tourist. I could not do the extension based on marriage because we were married in the USA and Thai Immigration now requires a Kor Ror 22 from the local Ampur's office where you are applying.
To get the Kor Ror 22 I have to have our original certified copy of our marriage certificate certified by the US Department of State in VA, that took almost 2 months, I will then have my wife send it to the Los Angeles Thai Consulate for translation and certification. Once we get that back to Thailand, we go to the Thai Foriegn Ministry Office here in Phuket where we are currently, then to the Amphur's office with two Thai witnesses to say we are still married in order to get the Kor Ror 22. PIMA! I have been here in Rawai for 20 years and they keep making more hoops for me to jump through. Thai Immigration used to take an earnings affidavit from the US Embassy, that stopped. They used to take a marriage certificate in English, that stopped 4 years ago. If you were married in Thailand it's a little easier.
This year I came in on a 60 day tourist exempt, put money in my account, applied to change to non O based on retirement and just got a one year extension to stay in the Kingdom based on retirement. I got a single re-enty since we have to go back to California as I need to renew my wife's Green Card in July, along with file our income taxes. Nothing is easy anymore.
Another one is if my wife is out of the US 180 days or more she has to have a good reason and be interviewed at the airport or she can be denied entry as she spent more than half the year outside the US.
In your case, John is correct. Even trying to change from an OA to a marriage extension in Thailand, your base visa was the OA and insurance may still be required. All marriage extensions now are submitted in duplicate, one copy for the local office and the other is sent to either the regional headquarters or Bangkok for approval. In the meantime you get a stamp that says under consideration.
John Tidona I am no visa expert, but I think that a visa is no longer active if you leave the country. If you want to know for sure, consult a visa expert.
The answer to both questions is no. Once your Non-OA visa has passed it's validity date you can leave Thailand and apply for a 90 day Non-O visa at the thai consulate that serves wherever you travel to. But until you leave Thailand to get away from the Non-OA you are always going to be stuck with the insurance requirement.
Alf Espetveit Even after switching to a marriage extension, your stay remains technically tied to your original O-A entry. Some immigration offices may still ask for insurance because the "base" visa is O-A. To completely sever ties with the O-A and its rules, many people choose to leave Thailand, cancel their O-A, and re-enter on a standard Non-Immigrant O (Marriage) visa.
no. I'm saying if your Non-OA has passed it's validity date and you leave Thailand without a re-entry permit it doesn't need cancelled. It can't be used again and you should apply for a Non-O visa before returning. It doesn't matter where you leave to.
