Question on transitioning from a work to tourist visa...

I'm working in Bangkok and am terminating my employment during the last week of December. My company has said they will be cancelling my visa and work permit, and then I will have 7 days until I need to leave the country (or be issued another visa). My intentions are to stay in Thailand and look for another job - I live here with my husband who is also on a work visa, but of course Thailand won't recognize our marriage so a spouse visa isn't an option for me.

Is it possible to apply for and be issued a tourist visa without having to exit and re-enter the country? This wouldn't be a concern of mine if it weren't for Covid and being uncertain if I will be able to do that easily/quickly from a nearby country come the first week of January.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about transitioning from a work visa to a tourist visa in Thailand after their employment ends. They want to know if it's possible to apply for a tourist visa without leaving the country, especially amidst uncertainty due to Covid-19. Comments indicate that the process requires leaving the country and applying for a tourist visa from abroad, as there are no options to extend the stay or switch visa types from within Thailand.

Unless you are working for BOI/IEAT company, there isn't an automatic 7days-stamp to leave Thailand.

There is no tourist option available inside Thailand other than the Thailand Elite program.

Your employer cancels nothing. It is your work permit and it is your passport.

YOU and only you are responsible. Cancel your work permit at the Ministry of Labor where you got it, it can be done in advance but last day is last day of employment.

Then you visit the Immigration Office and cancel your Extension of Stay based on employment, can also done in advance and the last date is the last date of employment.

Then you have to leave the country or apply for a new Extension of Stay with another reason.

Are there options to apply for an extension of stay that don't require leaving the country?

As your marriage here is not recognized You have zero options other than leave and apply for a tourist visa in another country.

OK, you will only get the 7 days extension if you apply for and pay for it. (it is actually a refusal of extension). after that you MUST leave the country.
