TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is inquiring if they can apply for a retirement visa at an immigration office in Samui or if they need to travel to Penang or Kuala Lumpur. Comments from the community suggest that the ability to switch to a retirement visa may depend on their current visa status, particularly whether they are currently on an ED visa with extensions. They might need to provide financial documentation proving they have the required funds or a steady income.

If you are on an extension of stay you would get documentation from your school stating you want to cancel your ED extension, go to the immigration office, cancel your extension, immediately apply for a year extension based on being over 50 (retirement). You would need to show the 800K baht in a thai bank account in your name for the requisite time, or show a letter from your consulate stating you get 65K baht a month in income from abroad OR a combination of the two that equals 800K baht in a year.
If you have more than 15 days left on your Admitted to Stay date given on the original visa you can apply at Immigration for the Non Immigrant O visa based on being over 50 years of age (some people call this retirement visa). You get a Single Entry Non Immigrant O visa stamped in your passport and a stay for 90 days, 45 days before the last day you can than apply for the 1 year Extension of Stay based on being over 50 years of age (also called retirement visa).
