Can I apply for a Covid extension or a stay extension as a Thai national while holding a NON-IMM ED visa?

Hello everybody, I need some help.

I came to Bangkok with a NON-IMM ED visa for a curricular internship which expires on November 23rd. I tried to ask my internship and the university for a document so I can extend my visa, however they gave me wrong documents and it takes them FOREVER to issue a new one, therefore I was turned away at the immigration office. Is it possible that I can go to the immigration next week and apply for Covid extension based on this reason, and do you think it will help me better if I also show them that I am also Thai national as well (I have a Thai national ID)? I came with my Swedish passport (I have dual citizenships) as I haven't renewed my Thai passport since I moved to Sweden in 2000.

I want to stay in Thailand until the end of December, can I give the reason of wanting to visit my relatives as a good reason? Also, if I do the Covid extension, will my NON-IMM ED visa be cancelled?

Thank you if you can give me some advice. It has been super stressful and emotional today at the immigration office at Cheang Wattana.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on extending their NON-IMM ED visa in Thailand due to delays from their university in issuing necessary documentation for an internship. They are considering applying for a Covid extension and are also bringing up their Thai nationality as a potential advantages. Commenters suggest that proof of Thai citizenship may allow for a one-year extension, but clarify whether the existing NON-IMM ED visa would need to be cancelled before applying for the extension.

Thank you everyone for your help, I will ask my father to see if he has my birth certificate and also other documents to help me to get the one year extension. I will ask him to call the immigration office for me

Would the ED visa need to be formally cancelled?

@Wannikea ********
no, they only got the 90 day Non-ED visa so they can stay that 90 days without doing anything and then get the year extension straight off that based on being a thai

If you have proof that you're a Thai Citizen, I recommend getting a one year extension of stay based on being a Thai Citizen. You will need to submit proof that you are a Thai Citizen to the immigration office, and they would grant you a one year extension of stay.

If he has a still valid Thai ID then he should be able to go any amphur and request copy birth certificate.

thank you for your answer. But does the proof has to be like birth certificate or do you think a national Thai ID will be enough?

I don’t have anything except my Thai ID, I guess my biological father who is here in Thailand would have that but I am not in the best of terms with him. I guess I have to ask. Thank you!

, visit your local immigration office to check the requirement.

This is not exactly what you need, but may be able to help you to grab a rough image

, if you have a Thai ID, I guess it's much easier.. Check with your local immigration office ASAP.

Be ready that you may need to cancel your current extension based on ED first or apply for change the reason of extension with the letter from the school. That is also the reason you need to talk with your local IO first ASAP.

I recommend bringing as many documents with you as possible. I believe only Thais are able to get a Thai ID card, and they should be able to cross reference it in the system. Do you have your house book by chance?
