Can I apply for a 30-day visa extension in Bangkok now or should I wait until closer to my expiration date?

Hi,

I recently arrived in Thailand on the 30-day visa exempt. I’d like to extend for 30 days but also planning to travel around a bit in the next few weeks, locations a bit tbc, but also hoping to do a liveabord for a week. My question is, can apply for the extension now in Bangkok by going to CW, or do I need to wait until close to the expiry in mid December and apply at my nearest immigration office (likely Phuket or Samui)?

Many thanks in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user wants to know if they can apply for a 30-day extension of their visa exemption now in Bangkok or should wait until closer to the expiry date in mid-December. The replies suggest that in Bangkok, one can apply for an extension even with 45 days or fewer remaining on their current stamp. They will need to provide various documents, including their passport, copies of relevant pages, a TM30 form, and a fee of 1,900 THB. Different immigration offices might have varied policies, but applying in Bangkok is possible as per current practices.

Bangkok allows you to apply for a tourism extension when you have 45days or fewer days on your current stamp. You can go to apply any day now.

I've been turned away for visa extension if more than 14 days before expiry date. But each immigration office is different.

Which immigration office was that?

Samui. Yet I got one extension, within 5 days of arriving in Thailand in a BK suburb office 🤷‍♀️

Doesn't matter in my opinion. All immigration offices require no less then 30 days remaining on your existing stamp before they issue you a 30 day extension of stay based on tourism.

>can apply for the extension now in Bangkok by going to CW,

You would use Muang Thong Thani Immigration office IF you are using Bangkok.

Easiest way is BTS to Wat Phra Sri Mahathat station, then get a cab from the roundabout under the station.

You can do it there as well. All 30 day extension of stays based on tourism are issued on the spot. You will need the following:

1. Your passport and:

a. a copy of your data ("picture") page

b. a copy of your most recent visa (if you have one)

c. a copy of your most recent stamp

d. a copy of your departure card

2. A TM30, filed in the immigration office.

3. The forms (each immigration office may have different forms, and want to use their special forms)

4. 1x passport pictures (some immigration offices require 2x passport pictures)

5. 1,900 THB.

No less than 30 or no more than 30?

, it is 30days or less. (45 days or less at a few immigration offices including Bangkok)

You need no less than 30 days remaining for all immigration offices. SOME allow it when you have 45 days remaining.

For example, if a person enters on a 60 day tourist visa, they will have to wait until day 45 at some immigration offices before they apply for a 30 day extension of stay based on tourism.

No less than 30 means 30 or more. That is impossible on a visa exempt stamp.

Ok, let me re-write my response:

If a person enters on a 30 day visa exempt, s/he can apply for a 30 day extension of stay based on tourism at any time at whatever immigration office a TM30 is submitted.

If a person enters on a 60 day single entry tourist visa (or 90 day non-immigrate visa), FOR some immigration offices, they would have to wait until they have 45 days or less remaining on their existing "admitted to" stamp. At all immigration offices, they need to have 30 days or less remaining on their existing "admitted to" stamp.

Much clearer. Sorry to pick on the grammar but it was the opposite meaning.
