TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around whether an Education (ED) visa can be converted to a Retirement visa in Thailand. It is clarified that if one is on an extension of stay based on education, they can successfully change the reason for their extension to retirement by providing necessary documentation from their school and proof of financials. Successful transitions from an ED extension to a Retirement extension have been noted, provided all requirements are met.

Now we're getting some where.

You are on an extension of stay, SO to change the "reason" for your extension from one based on education to one based on being over 50 (retirement) you would

Take a letter from your school to the immigration office stating you are stopping studying on the day your current extension expires

the immigration office would cancel your existing extension AND then you would immediately apply for a new yearly extension based on being over 50 (retirement) by meeting the proof of financials and by supplying the correct documentation.

I have seen several people successfully go from an ED extension to one based on retirement without issues IF they have all the documentation and meet the proof of financials for the retirement extension..

OK, thank you Tod, I guess if I visit my Immigration Office they can verify this. :)

They will cancel the ED extension you're on, and they will put a new extension good for a year in your passport with the word "retirement" stamped on it. It will cost 1900baht (just like ALL extensions cost in the country no matter the length of time they're issued for) :)

okay, let's get this sorted out you are NOT applying for ANY visa :O

Right now you are NOT on any visa, you are on an extension of stay <- which is NOT a visa,

You got that extension by originally getting a Non-Immigrant Type ED visa

All you are doing is canceling the extension you have based on education and applying for a brand new extension (a second later) based on being over 50 (retirement).

Thanks Tod, if I go when my current extension expires with the letter from the school and apply for the retirement visa, do they issue another extension too? I was under the imprseeeion I had to leave the country and on re-entry apply again...

Okay, first off you need to say whether you're on an EXTENSION of stay based on studying <- that you get from the immigration office

OR

If you're still on the original entry of the ED VISA <- that you got from a thai consulate in another country
