Czech family, arrival Thailand 15 Sep 2026 shortly after midnight, return after approx. 33 days, tickets purchased before the rule change, e-Visa application currently problematic, travelling with a 2-year-old child. Can we enter visa-exempt and extend in Thailand, and has anyone confirmed with an airline whether a return flight on day 33 is accepted at check-in?
Answer summary
A Czech family plans to arrive in Thailand on September 15, 2026, and stay for approximately 33 days, but are concerned about the validity of their onward travel and visa requirements as they travel with a 2-year-old child. They are considering entering visa-exempt and extending their stay. Community responses advise contacting the specific airline regarding check-in policies, as different airlines may have varying requirements for proof of onward travel. It is suggested that they apply for an extension while in Thailand, especially since the child is not subject to penalties for overstays. For their situation, it is also recommended to buy an onward ticket and to wait until closer to the end of their initial 30 days to apply for an extension, noting that local immigration offices in Koh Samui and Koh Phangan may have different procedures.

Nobody can confirm because until the rules change, nobody has done it. It's all speculation

If in doubt, go on line and apply for a 60 day tourist visa.

Listen to me

Stay on the safe side:

1) buy now an onward ticket before the 30th day. Also a bus ticket is OK.

2) when on thailand apply for the visa extension

Peter Parker doesn’t it have to be an onward ticket by air?

Anna Persson No, lots of people have used bus tickets. The requirement is just to show proof of onward travel.

If asked at check in just inform airline that you will be applying for an extension

They may not have enough time - they're leaving in about a week. Depending on the embassy or consulate handling their application, it typically takes from 3 - 15 days. Some sites recommend that you submit your application at least 4 weeks (1 month) before your travel date.

Thanks so much, Brandon, that’s really helpful.

We’ll contact our airline directly to confirm their policy regarding the return flight on day 33.

Just to make sure I understand correctly: if the airline allows us to board, we should be able to enter Thailand visa-exempt for 30 days and then apply for a 30-day extension at Immigration during our stay, right?

We’ll be staying on Koh Samui/Koh Phangan, so we could arrange the extension there before the initial 30 days expire.

And even though our daughter is only two, we’d prefer to extend her stay as well so everything is fully in order.

Thanks again!

yes, if your airline has no issues then you should be fine in Thailand, especially if you already have proof you'll be leaving after 33 days. In the rare case they even ask, you could just tell them you'll be getting an extension and leaving on the date of your existing tickets.

For Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, they are considered "rogue" immigration offices that don't follow the normal procedures. They only allow tourist extensions during the last few days of your entry stamp. So you'll have to wait until you're almost out of time to apply. Every other office (except Pattaya) allows you to apply when you have 30 days or less left, which means you'd be able to apply the day you arrived everywhere else.

Thanks so much, Brandon, this really helps!

It’s our honeymoon and we’re travelling with our 2-year-old daughter, so we just want to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible.

We’ll check directly with our airline about the return flight on day 33. If they’re fine with it, we’ll just plan to extend our stay in Thailand before the 30 days are up.

Really good to know about Samui/Phangan too — we’ll make sure not to go too early for the extension.

Thanks again, really appreciate your help!

Next time when it’s something important like a honeymoon try to prepare well. It has been coming for months. Why you didn’t apply for a tourist visa and have peace of mind. Now you are risking you get denied boarding a plane

Katka Frolíková honestly, calling your airline will not help, as it’ll depend on the person checking you in. Some of them will check every paper listed, others couldn’t care less. So far, I have never been asked to show proof of onward ticket out of Thailand, and if asked you can tell them you are planning to take a short trip to Malaysia and if they really insist - you can quickly buy a cheap AirAsia flight right there. But if you do online checkin and have no issues - you are pretty much all set

You need to talk to YOUR airline, not any airline. You need to check with YOURS, because it's their policy that matters. Some airlines will require proof of a ticket out of Thailand within 30 days if you are flying without a visa. If your airline requires that, they will not let you checkin or board your flight without it. If you get to Thailand, it's not likely to be an issue as they do not often check for proof of onward travel unless you have a long history in Thailand or there are other red flags in your file.

You will need to apply for an extension while you're in Thailand. You don't need to bother with getting an extension for the child, as they cannot be fined for overstay nor can they be banned for overstay, as those penatlies do not start until age 15.
