TLDR : Answer Summary
A Chinese student on a Non Immigrant ED visa cannot volunteer, as this visa is specifically for students. However, if the student possesses a Non Immigrant O visa, he can volunteer with the appropriate permits and permissions.

Not when using the Non Immigrant ED visa as this is specialized to go school, but he can do with the Non Immigrant O visa based on being a Volunteer and the Work Permit, in his spare time he can follow classes,

The WP yes as the charity is mentioned inside, he can still use the period of stay he got on the visa, but not an Extension of Stay based on being a volunteer,

@Robert ******
And that sucks because his ED visa times and dates are based on his semesters, the volunteer stuff doesn't.
