Why was my DTV application replaced with a METV visa after my interview in Savannakhet, Laos?

DTV Application but got METV (Savannakhet, Laos)

I applied for the Thailand DTV under a Muay Thai training program and was eventually issued a 6-month METV instead.

Earlier this year, I entered Thailand on a visa exemption and extended it for one month. After staying in Thailand for about 2 months and half, I traveled to Laos for a short trip (about one week). When I tried to re-enter Thailand by land, I was told that I must have a valid visa, so I decided to apply for a DTV at the Thai Consulate in Savannakhet, Laos.

I enrolled in a 6-month Muay Thai course at a gym in Chiang Mai.

Timeline of my application:

June 29 (early morning): Submitted application documents

June 29 (9:30 AM): Paid the visa fee

June 29 (11:00 AM): Status changed to Pending Document Check

June 30 (9:00 AM): Requested additional documents

June 30 (11:00 AM): I re-uploaded a scanned copy of my passport bio page and updated 6-month recent photos

July 1 (morning): Status changed to Pending Approval

July 1 (noon): Status changed to Interview Invitation

(Interview scheduled for the next day at 2:00 PM)

July 2 (2:00 PM): Attended interview (around 20 minutes). I was told to wait for email notification afterwards.

July 3 (around 2:30 PM): The online system still showed Interview Invitation, but later it suddenly changed to “Approved”.

However, when I checked the email, I found that instead of a DTV, I was actually issued a METV (Multiple Entry Tourist Visa).
Answer summary
The user applied for a DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) to participate in a 6-month Muay Thai training program in Thailand but instead received a METV (Multiple Entry Tourist Visa). They provided a detailed timeline of their application process and described an interview at the Thai Consulate in Savannakhet, Laos. While the application initially seemed to follow a standard procedure, they were ultimately granted a METV instead of the sought-after DTV. Comments from the community suggest that several factors may have influenced this outcome, including the length of the course, required financial documentation, and trends in visa issuance policies. Many users shared experiences and advice regarding future applications.

I just entered Thailand through Mukdahan land border checkpoint. I asked the immigration officer how long I could stay in Thailand with this visa, what I should do next, and whether I could leave and re-enter through the same checkpoint in the future.

They told me that I couldn't use this checkpoint again because I had already used it twice this year, and that I would have to use a different border crossing next time.

I told them that today was actually my first time re-entering through this checkpoint. I had left Thailand through this border about two weeks ago, and this was my first time coming back. But they said that it still counts as two times.

That’s okay you got a 6 month Visa for your 6 month course, surely was the intention wasn’t it? You would have to depart Thailand after 180 days anyway even with a DTV?
Sophie ****

OP
@Marcus *****
This is very different. With this visa, I can only stay in Thailand for two months. Of course, I can pay to extend it for one more month, but after that I have to leave the country and re-enter. Compared with the DTV, which allows you to stay in Thailand continuously for up to six months, I think it's a huge difference.

you can leave and come straight back for the other 3 months. Annoying but no other way.

ah okay I wasn’t aware it’s only actually applicable for 3 months in country, and the visa is only valid from date of issue for 6 months.

That being the case it’s not really fit for for purpose on a 6 month course is it 🤷‍♂️

I was lucky I applied online for my DTV four documents and 3 days later and it was approved. I applied as a remote worker and was already pretty established in Thailand having a permanent residential address, and personal property etc.

Sophie ****

@Illya *******
Right now, the only explanation I can think of is that I have too much money in my bank account. My balance has consistently been more than seven times the required amount, and I also have a fixed passive monthly income of around USD 4,000. Maybe they found that unusual and wondered why I have so much cash available.
Tahani *****

maybe they wanted you to consider the LTR visa as they could see that you could actually afford it. I have seen someone talking about it here on the group

idk, could be. When I applied they wanted to see detailed finacial history and consistent monthly income. I went cooking route and went to HCMC thai immigration. Try again but go thorough Vietnam

To be honest, if I apply again next time, I'll probably move most of the money out of my bank account in advance and leave just enough to meet their financial requirement.

@Sophie ***
The monthly income was probably the issue. Next time, only show your savings account. What did you state under employment status and monthly income on your application? For a soft-power DTV, it's important to state "unemployed" and "no income." That worked for me in Savannakhet and also for a friend a few months later, also in Savannakhet
Sophie ****
Sophie ****
OP
There’s a really funny clip I also want to share. I think I "might" look much younger than my actual age, so when he was asking where my passive income came from, I explained that it was from a project I did 20 years ago. Then he asked in a surprise, “How old were you 20 years ago?” After I answered him, he suddenly went back to check my passport bio page. Then he burst out laughing, turned around, and started talking and laughing with his other two colleagues. At the time I didn’t understand why he reacted like that, but it was obvious that he didn’t actually know how old I am.
Sophie ****

And during the conversation, there were quite a few details where I wasn’t sure whether he truly understood what I meant, and I also wasn’t sure whether I fully understood what he meant either. So I would still recommend that if someone wants to apply in Laos, it’s better to do it in Vientiane.

I have a question. Now that I have obtained this METV visa, although it is a multiple-entry visa valid for six months, am I allowed to enter and exit Thailand repeatedly?

For example, can I leave once every two months, then come back and stay for another two months? Or extend my stay by one month every two months, then leave for a few days after three months and return again to get another two months?

Is it possible to stay in Thailand continuously for up to eight months using this visa in that way? Or do I still need to follow certain rules, such as leaving the country after staying for three months and staying outside for a period of time before coming back?

@Sophie ***
You can exit and enter repeatedly and get a 60 day stamp upon arrival. You can stay 90 days via an IO extension at 2mths. There is no minimum time to be out of the country before returning. You can stay 8mth with the right timing of your final entry.

@Tahani ****
I can’t remember everything clearly now because it was extremely hot that day, and my interview was at 2PM. I was sweating the whole time.

But I could clearly feel that I was the only person being interviewed.

Regarding my bank statements, I had already submitted three months online. He then asked to see six months on my phone, which I also showed him. After that, he asked to see one year of records. However, my mobile app could not display a full year; it can only be sent via email.

The problem was that accessing the email requires a verification code, and the code is linked to my overseas phone number. I couldn’t receive the SMS in Laos, so in the end I wasn’t able to show him the one-year statement.

But I think this probably shouldn’t be a major issue.

OP
I have some friends who applied a few months ago. They enrolled in the same Muay Thai gym as I did, but they only registered for a three-month course. They had no income at all, yet their applications were approved in Vientiane.

So I don't think my income was the issue. In my application, I stated that I am currently not working, but that I receive passive income 4000usd every month. I also showed that my savings are far above the required amount.

Because of that, I think questions about income and finances were probably just part of their standard verification process, rather than the main reason why I was not granted a DTV visa.
Sophie ****
Sophie ****
OP
@Tahani ****
I don't think so.

Considering my age, my savings, my passive income and my previous work experience, I don't think they believed I intended to work in Thailand. He asked about my previous job and my income, and I explained and he can know that my earnings were far above the average income level in Thailand.

So I don't think he suspected that I would be working in Thailand.

My impression was that he might simply have been trying to fill the interview time. When he was asking me questions, he also seemed a little nervous, as if he weren't always sure what to ask next.

At the end of the interview, before finishing, the officer even turned around and asked his colleagues if anyone else had any questions.

It’s just so strange. Maybe they assumed you were planning to work on the side and that Muay Thai wasn’t actually the main purpose of your stay? Of course.. that’s only my assumption, I could be completely wrong.

@Tahani ****
Yes, that’s not a problem for me at all. I would be very willing to show it to him. Even if he asked for the past three years, that would be fine, because over the past three consecutive years, my bank balance has consistently been far above the required amount.

It is becoming increasingly clear that a more than 6 months course is needed. Many are still getting by with 6, but I will tell anyone to increase to at least 9 these days.
Andi ***********
Andi ***********
You will be able to stay around 8 mths with your METV. Similar applicants have been successful getting a DTV post METV and have posted about it in the threads. It is increasingly important to show the need for the 5 yr DTV and how you will fund your 5 years. A longer course than 6mths strengthens your application

Thank you for your detailed explanation. Today, I also spoke with someone who has experience with DTV application in Savanakhet. He told me that in Savannakhet, a 9-month course is generally required, while in Vientiane, a 6-month course can still be approved.

I believe my financial documents were not a problem. During the interview, they asked me a lot of detailed questions, and I provided plenty of supporting evidence.

Looking back, I think my main weaknesses were that I chose the wrong location—I should have applied in Vientiane. If I wanted to apply in Savannakhet, I should have prepared a 9-month course instead.

Thank you again for your help. Perhaps I will apply again in the future.

You definitely should apply again as you basically have what is needed. Next year when you apply it is likely Vientiane will be more in line with Savannakhet and 9mths a general requirement. Jakarta now requests 9mth minimum courses. Anyway you have a good amount of time to enjoy Thailand at least you not totally rejected.

What was covered in the interview? Did they ask you what you would do in six months?
Sophie ****

OP
DTV_BegPecker

Looking back on the interview, I feel there were few things that were a little unusual.

At the very beginning, the officer spoke to me in Thai. I was caught off guard because my Thai isn't good enough to answer interview questions, so I asked if we could speak in English. He then asked me, "What do you do in Thailand?"

At that moment, I wasn't sure whether he was asking what I had been doing during the past three months in Thailand or what I was planning to do in the future. So I answered that I had spent the past three months traveling in Thailand, and that over the next few months I planned to study Muay Thai.

Overall, he didn't ask many questions about Muay Thai. He only asked which gym I had chosen and how I found it. I don't think there were any obvious problems with my answers. Throughout the interview, he didn't repeatedly question any particular point.

He did examine my bank statements quite carefully, but there didn't seem to be any issues with them.

I think the language may have been an important factor. Many of his questions didn't clearly indicate what he was asking for. Since it was my first DTV interview, I also didn't really understand the underlying logic of the application process. From my perspective, the questions seemed to jump from one topic to another without a clear connection. Perhaps there was actually a very clear logic behind them, but I simply couldn't recognize it during the interview.

Because of that, my answers may have made it sound as though my main purpose was tourism. Of course, that's only my guess. It's also entirely possible that this had nothing to do with the final decision. The real reason may simply have been that a six-month Muay Thai course was considered more appropriate for a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa than for a DTV.

To be honest, the interview environment itself was also quite uncomfortable.

I had to stand outside the building while the officer was inside, and we communicated through a small service window. It was extremely hot that day. There was no fan or air conditioning outside, and my back was covered in sweat throughout the interview.

Because of the small window, I couldn't see anything inside. Every time I wanted to hear him better or make sure he could see and understand my responses, I had to bend down and tilt my head up to look at him.

It felt as though he was standing above me, looking down, while I had to lean forward and look up at him through the window. I think that physical setup also made our communication less smooth and natural.

Looking for cheap and cheaper option and get 6 months than 1 year enrollment

Fair enough what a 6 months application get for that period .

Technically 6 months course can be pursued with 6 months METV.

It’s not officially mentioned anywhere in the requirements but ideally you should enrol for minimum of 9 months course. It will make your DTV application strong enough which can’t be achieved by other visa types

It happens a lot with only 6 month courses as an METV is sufficient for those 6 months. Make the most of your METV and if at the end of the 6 months it's valid for try again for the DTV but it's best if you can use workation, if you want soft power book a course of at least 9 months, maybe even 12
Sophie ****

@John *********
Yes, next time I will probably try applying under the workation category.

The reason I didn't choose that option this time was, first, that I already had sufficient proof of stable passive income and enough money in my bank account. I didn't want to complicate my application by submitting too many documents.

Second, I didn't have enough time to prepare.

My original plan was to enter Thailand using the visa exemption scheme. In fact, I haven't entered Thailand by land under the visa exemption program at all this year.

Unfortunately the trend is clear : more and more embassies issue a METV instead of soft power DTV. Just enough to cover the duration of the activity. Looks like the new government is willing to terminate for good the scheme of issuing a 5 years visa for a 1 month cooking class.

The soft power DTV being officially cancelled soon is highly likely.

we do understand English yes, its ok thought. I think you didn’t say what you meant to say.

The way you worded it, makes a very strong implication that it would be cancelled. The word you probably are looking for is “could be”.

If you use “highly likely”, it strongly implies there’s already official indications/signals that its being considered to actually cancel. Which as far as I know isn’t the case at all.

We misunderstood what you meant because your English didn’t make it clear what you meant.

Even if you added “i think its highly likely” would completely change what you said and be more understable. But still obviously speculative
