Why is my agency charging me 17,000 BAHT to switch my tourist visa to a Non-B visa?

I came to Thailand in March 2020 as a tourist and accepted a job here. I'm still on a tourist visa and the job agency is saying that it will cost 17,000 BAHT to switch my tourist visa to a non B so that I can legally work. That's a lot of money for me and I've heard from other teachers in a similar situation being able to switch their tourist visa to a nonB for just 1900 baht. None of this makes sense... Why is my agency telling me I have to pay an extra 15100!!!! Can someone please enlighten me?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual is confused about the high fees being charged by their job agency to switch from a tourist visa to a Non-B visa for legal employment in Thailand. Many commentators suggest that the agency is taking advantage of them, highlighting that similar visa changes can be done for significantly lower costs. They advise evaluating legal requirements for the position and considering direct employment with schools instead of going through agencies, which may bring unnecessary fees and complications.

Whatever happened to Dave’s ESL Cafe and Ajarn.com? If you just leave your current teaching job, and find new work in Khon Kaen or somewhere, at a school or ESL school with a reputation that processes visas for staff, is that an option to consider?

That's not really a lot of money for such a long term investment.

The company hire you, they should pay the fee for you..unless it's u collaborating with the agency to get a long-term visa and actually you are not working..

I'm currently a teacher married to a Thai woman with a Thai baby and I am in the process of getting a non-oviso. I will say is the school should be able to help you but you will have to do most of the leg work on your own. go in person to your immigration office, hopefully with someone from your school ask them how you do it. they're the only ones who know and each city has different officials who do different things and require different "payments." they should just give you a list of what they need and if you get it you can do it.

Never use an agency unless you have to. Your future status can be in jeopardy because you'll have to keep going to the same agency to "fix" your situation.
Colin ********
Quit the agency and get a proper job, there are plenty of schools looking and they will help you take care of your WP and visa. Agencies in Thailand are sharks and scammers generally, but not all. Before COVID you had to have a non-O to transfer for your WP, so if in a tourist visa you need a letter offering you employment which you would then take to the embassy or consulate outside Thailand to exchange for a 90 day non-O visa, which will allow you to start your employment while the school arranges your WP and visa. This may all be doable within Thailand with the current COVID situation, but you will need to check that. So my advise 1) get a letter offering you employment 2) exchange your visa for a non-O 3) start work and the school should apply for your WP and visa.

You can accept a job on a tourist visa?

Wow. First time which was 20 years ago I had to form Ltd company and show all degrees and prof quals. This time at BOI company they only wanted to see MBA and no prof quals. BOI is so much easier if you go to a company that has it.

I was in a similar situation but with the customs dept when I had to import personal effects into Thailand back in 2012. A fee was paid without receipt and another with receipt.

My advise if you can -front the cash -do it everything has its price.

Technically now to teach you need a certified copy of your university diploma and transcript. You also need a hire letter on school letterhead that they are hiring you. The cost for the visa extension is bt1900, and your work permit, that you must have to legally work is another bt3800. If you have your certified diploma there are plenty of schools that will hire you, and help you get legal. This website will help you. Get as far away from that agency as you can. By the way, how much were they paying you?

Daniel *******
It sounds like it's most or all company fee. But be careful. You may have to pay again after 90 days. Ask the visa duration.
Ryan ********
The company should be paying to switch your visa. If they want you to work for them that should be a cost they cover.

Better to find a job without using an agency and by using the old-fashioned method: doing the legwork.

I have lived in Thailand for over four years and found my job, not that far from Hat Yai, by applying to an online ad on Ajarn.com . Check it out.

think about how much it would cost to you (and get money to Thailand) if you just travel back home and get the visa done over there. When they make you visa without leaving the country they lost money and you save!

Only the quarantine in ASQ hotel is minimum
*****
baht. (And lots of other places where have to put money, insurance from thai company, covid test, visa, flights maybe in thai airways, maybe end up to hospital from quarantine and hospital fees..etc.. lots of money you save and lots of money Thailand wont get.. 😉 ) So you save money from this point of view. And they let you do that without traveling and quarantine etc...
Benjamin ******
You say "agency". Is this a teaching agency?

once you quit your job, find a school and get directly hired by the school. The environment would be so much better too

run away, now!

1. You're working illegally in Thailand. If you're caught (slim chance these days), you'll be deported.

2. It's somewhat easy to convert an extension of stay based on COVID-19 to a Non-B visa and an extension of stay based on employment. (probably) no excuse.

3. I worked for a teaching agency. From the agents viewpoint, you're replaceable. Your agent is trying to get money out of you that he should be doing. Pay the following fees:

Non-B visa:2K THB

Extension of stay based on employment: 1,900 THB

Work permit: 3K THB (if my memory serves me right).

If you give the agent the money, expect more excuses. That's what happened to me.

@Wayne ****
No - the WP Certificate is down to the Department of Labour. If your employer wants extra that is a whole different ballgame. The WP Cert at Bumrungrad as I explained is just over 600 Baht and it satisfies the WP part.

Do you meet the legal requirements for you position? If so then you don't need an agency to facilitate the visa change. A letter from your employer and a couple documents from them showing they can employ forigners is about it.

I meet all the legal obligations, it's just the agency saying that since I can't leave the country and come back to switch the visa the only way to do it while inside Thailand will be

which I find insane! Especially because I've heard of other teachers switching their visas inside Thailand for only 1900 or 3000

They are paying someone off basically and making a commission for themselves. To change my Tourist Visa to a Non-B I had to go to the Thai Embassy in Singapore. Think the cost of the 90 day non-B there was around a 100 USD. This was reimbursed of course as were all flights and hotels. When I got back to Thailand I went to one Stop shop and got my WP and visa extended for 2 years - no idea of the cost. This was pre-covid and for a BOI company.
Apex ********************
@Gr**
BOI is much different than non BIO employers.
Greg ********
@Thailand ***************************************
Of course it is but leaving the country for your Non-B was pretty much standard pre-covid - BOI or not. As a Brit I could go to Singapore but some nationalities, eg Indians, have to return to home countries.
