Why is Krungthai Bank asking for my CRS/FATCA information as a DTV visa holder?

Feb 24, 2026

Hi everyone,

I received a message from Krungthai Bank asking me to update my CRS/FATCA information. I am not a U.S. citizen and I currently hold a DTV visa in Thailand.

Recently I deposited 20,000 THB into my account (cash from my home country bank withdrawal). Could that be the reason ??

Has anyone experienced something similar?

What will bank do ? Will they close my account ? And charge me tax ?

I used to have students now switched to DTV

Thank you 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster, holding a DTV visa in Thailand, received a request from Krungthai Bank to update their CRS/FATCA information, raising concerns about possible account ramifications. Various community members have shared similar experiences, highlighting that this request is a common banking procedure aimed at confirming tax residency status. They emphasized that completing the required forms should not lead to account closure or tax implications as long as the paperwork is correctly submitted. Additionally, there's discussion around banking policies related to tourist visas, indicating that while there are stringent rules, exceptions exist, and account management can vary by branch.

Received it as well, asked chatgpt, it's something about fiscal residency, just fill in their form, nothing too special

They do this every year. You just prove where are you a tax resident. Thats it. Take your passport, you fill up a form and done.

Update: went to ktb. They filled in a form, didn’t ask me anything. Signed the form. ‘Finished’ asked what I signed told account update finished. That’s all. Take your passport

I'm curious how you managed to keep an account on DTV. I heard all the banks closed DTV accounts a while back.

no they didnt close "dtv accounts". They used automated system to close "suspicious accounts". That had absolutely nothing to do with visas. Banks dont even know what visa their customers hold currently

it is absolutely to do with visas. I had my account closed because my DTV is classed as a tourist visa. I was allowed to keep another acvount because i opened that on an OA a few years ago. Oh, this was the Bank manager telling me this in Chiang Rai, not a rural branch.

You are not allowed a bank account with a tourist visa, but as with all things in Thailand the staff are not well trained. We probably know more about the rules than the average bank employee, especially ones outside of tourist areas.

completely false. There’s not a single law preventing you from having bank account. Only Bank policies. And even with DTV there’s situations where they do allow to both open and keep Bank accounts.

Read my post again and point to where I said it is the law. I don't know whose policy it is but they do not let you open bank accounts if you only have a tourist visa or visa-exempt. It has been possible in the past but now they are far more stringent.

I had to complete some forms declaring that I paid tax in the UK some time ago. As you are on a DTV which is considered a tourist visa you might have a problem keeping the account

CRS Common Reporting Standard is a joint global initiative to monitor global financial activities.

(For the purpose of ensuring everyone is paying tax)

What this means;

Whenever you use a bank or financial service, the provider (Bank) must report to the home country of the individual that they hold an account, how much & all transactions are made, to the individuals home country.

Banks in Thailand are at risk of fines if they don't submit their annual report to the Thai Revenue Department on all foreign account holders financial activity. Thai revenue department then sends all the data to each individual country.

It was originally meant to be a full report of all financial account activity, but that much data would cause issues.

You are correct, currently the focus is only on key identifying details and summary values for each reportable account.

But with the rise of AI everyone should assume full account transaction information is sent, as it will only be a matter of time before they'll be able to sift, scan & utilise line‑by‑line account transaction history.

There have been a couple of reports on here of people being asked for photo ID of their home country address eg driving licence or ID cards, when opening a bank account.

Thats normal KYC practice, especially when the account holder is not a permanent resident, additional due diligence is required by the bank.

I didn't know they sent transactions for everyone. From what I know only the balance is sent to home country once per year and more details are per request.

CRS applies to non-US citizens while FATCA is US specific. Could they use this visit to clamp down on your account? Yes, but ignoring it also won’t make it go away and they’ll likely freeze your account at some point.
